If there is no door bell, people usually go and just knock on the door with their hands. We don't have gates to go through, traditionally, in Canada, we just walk up to the houses, and knock or ring the doorbell. I live in an apartment building, and all the door bells are on a panel in the front. I am in apartment 105, so if someone wants me, they push the button next to my apartment number.

We have a calling bell in our veranda room.but one has to pass the gate and press the bell in that room.But most people visiting our house dont use this bell and we can hear the noise only in the night as my brother reaches home only after 11 pm and he is the one uses it daily as we used to keep our main door closed almost by 10 pm. You are right its quiet embrassing to keep shouting in front of the door and i have seen people knocking the door where this sound will not reach the inmates of the house like the noise of calling bell.

Sad to say, we don't have one of those here. My friends have to shout my name if they want to talk with me. There was one time when they shouted my name; and our next-door neighbour came out and shouted obscenities at them. It was really late at night, around 11 pm, and he wanted to get some sleep.
