Would you mind having a nuclear power plant built next to your house?

recently, in Australia, we have been having a debate about whether to harness the cheap, almost limitless energy which can be produced from nuclear reactors or to go for a safer, more environmentally sustainable, renewable energy source such as solar - basically the major debate has been whether to use our vast arid outback for a solar energy harnesser of the future or a dumping ground for nuclear waste. Then, one day, our pro-nuclear Prime Minister added to the debate by stating that he wouldn't mind having a nuclear reactor built right next to his house. Please tell me your thoughts, why? why not?

A nuclear power plant next to my house ? Come on ! Who wouldn't mind ? If this will ever happen i guess i would move out as soon as possible and as far as possible. Don't you remember Chernobyl anymore ? It doesn't matter for me on how much has increased the safety when it cames to a nuclear plant. I would never feel good and safe living near by such things. I live in Bucharest since i was born and in '86 when the disaster produced, everybody was scared even we were not close by. So i am sure i would never accept to live near by a nuclear plant.

haha try telling my prime minister that. Australia only has one nuclear reactor but our prime minister wants to build some for energy production - i think they should really consider building it next to his house - he deserves it - it can be a reward for all his hard work. but really, if they do build a couple i'll be glad that they will be far away from myself. Hopefully they won't adopt the idea of using our country for the world's global nuclear waste site.

I've had a nuclear power station up-wind of me at Bradwell for nearly 30 years that I have lived here. It is de-commissioned now but hopefully they will build a new one next door in the future. I have sailed and swum in the waters just off shore for about the same time. There is just so much bollacks talked about nuclear power by people who know nothing about it. There is a risk to any industrial plant, chemical, oil, gas, mines, etc. but if we want the luxury of electricity at night or in a calm then we need power stations and when fossil fuel runs out it will have to be nuclear.

I'm facing the same problem ,but mine is more real cause our government have already decided to built 2 or 3 nuclear power plants in my province, althoug not right next to my house but it's near enough for a little anxiety. In Europe they have excluded nuclear power as a green energy considering it's nuclear waste and something else, but I think it's ok,I dont worry that much, cause the odds of an accident is almost 0 plus we dont have much other energy in our country so I choose to support it.

Nuclear reactors still have to be fueled to run and the by-products are still dangerous. Personally, if given a choice, I would go for environmental friendlier solutions. The vast outback of Australia provides a number of ways to generate power with limited impact. I don't really see the need to built a reactor when so much more resources are there.
