Benjamin Abalos was appointed COMELEC chair in June 2001. Shortly before this, he served as chairman of the Metro Manila Decelopment Authority (MMDA) in 2001. He was appointed as mayor of Mandaluyong for the period 1986-1987. He won the mayoralty election in 1988 and was re-elected twice. He used to be regional trial court judge before entering politics.
