Hip problems in pit bulls?

United States

My baby Floyd has something wrong with his right hip--his right rear foot slides out when he's turning a corner in the kitchen. I know that the floor is slippery (he doesn't have this problem outside or on carpet) and I'm concerned about him (he IS going to visit the vet next week--how I'm getting him in my car is another issue!). Is this a common problem with pits? He's the first one I've owned and he's like my baby--I just want to know if this is common and any home remedies to help him (I don't want to put him down because otherwise he's fine).

Pit Bulls are not more susceptible to hip problems than any other breed but there is an ever increasing portion of the Pit Bull population showing joint problems. This is from a website about pit bulls. http://www.pitbulllovers.com/pitbullblog/?p=73

Thanks for the link--it's really helpful! I guess it's just the way he's built--he walks as if he's got a stick shoved up you know where! He has no problem running around outside, but I'm wondering if it's being on the linoleum in the kitchen???

Sometimes a pittie's hips can go in odd angles when they're trying to get their balance or stay on their feet. Their hips will look like they're out of joint or whatever but they're really not. He's probably fine, but see what your vet says. :)

Thanks for the advice--I always thought he had a little 'strut my stuff' thing going on, but I've noticed the last few days he's struggling when he turns. His legs are shaking too, but tonight it wasn't as bad as usual.

As far as his hips, as long as he doesn't seem to be in any pain, I wouldn't worry too much! Take him to the vet just to be sure though, as with anything! As far as getting him in the car, pick him up! My male loves to go for rides, but my female pup is another thing...but she's fine once she's in!
