How do i make my mylot page look really cool?

I know some people put lots of work into their pages and add lots of things to them, but those pages tend to make my computer freak ou a little when it tries to load the page. I am talking about the ones who have video comments, moving graphics, all of that is just too much. I don't see colour properly, either so some of the webpages are nearly unreadable- I can't see the text against the background or vice versa. I like simple, clean pages. I think the page I like best of all is scarletwoman's. Everything kind of goes together and matches, even her avatar. It is really easy on the eyes.
