Dogs in Apartment Buildings

I lived in a condo for a couple of years. We had a white Laso Apso named Missy that we took outside for a bathroom walk about 3 times a day and one walk in the park next door at least 4 times a week. On those potty walks for my dog I would run into a least two of the neighbours that had large dogs that lived in our building! I always felt so angry when I saw them because I felt it was so unfair to a larger dog to live in such close quarters! I somehow didn't mind as much the guy down the hallway who also had a big dog but he took his dog to the larger dog park across the street every single night for a long run while he rode his bike. The dog was getting the exercise that he needed. Do you think I am over reacting about big dogs living in apartment buildings? Does it really matter as long as their owner is taking them out to get some exercise?

I don't live in an apartment building, I live in a trailer. I have five dogs and they are lab/rot mixes, so they are not small dogs. There is not much room for them but they prefer to be in the house. Many times I have to play a "Twister" like game just to walk through the house.lol. But they have a dog pen that they go out in and get their exercise. I think it is ok as long as they are getting the exercise they need.

Okay, so woe that really is cramped quarters! That is worse than haveing one large dog in an apartment! Now are you sure that is okay for them. I get stressed out when I feel like I dont' have enough space. Do you think dogs get stressed out as well?

I'm sure dogs get stressed out but I don't think mine do over space issues. They tend to all bunch together and close to me. They go out whenever they want and my boyfriends son goes out and plays with them just about everyday. Now that the weather is nicer, we can start taking them for walks again. I think maybe because most of them were raised together, thats why they like to be together.

I have a bigger dog in an apartment and he is just fine. He goes out a few times a day for about 20 minutes each time. He is perfectly fine.

You know how it is sometimes.. you have a beef with something and you dont' really know why you have it. That is why I asked the question! People who have big dogs in smaller places can clarify ones thoughts. So thanks for that!

I agree with another poster. It depends on the temperment, not the size. I live in an apartment and have a small dog now. He's a miniature pinscher, and he needs more exercise than when I had a big dog in my apartment!!! Hopefully they are responsible dog owners, and they know what their dogs need. Just because a dog is small, doesn't mean that he needs less exercise! I would just let them be, and let them do their own thing. You just have to worry about your precious little pooch! :)

I don't think the size of the dog is as important as their temperment. I have 2 some what big dogs who would be very happy to be couch potatoes. They are as willing to walk as they are to snuggle.
