What makes Pink Floyd music so... nostalgic?

I feel that those "summer of years past" pictures and videos, together with the greatness of music and always relating to Syd, makes it all feels like someone wanting to go back in time. Verses like "Remember when you were young, you shone like the sun" and "Wish you were here" are very deeply connected to that. What do you think about it?

I think it is because of the way the lyrics are worded. Also because the music is just so evocative of times gone by. At the same time it is almost timeless, and can be of any time. It is almost Universal in its appeal across age groups. I love Pink Floyd.

Thanks for the comment! I think that the music on the classic albums, such as Dark Side and WYWHere, are very timeless because, in a way, it connects to the world we live in. The "madness reasons" on Dark Side exist for what?, maybe for two centuries now: money, time, working too much, if we take it in a "modern world" concept. But it's been always there since Medieval Age or even Ancient Greek. They can achieve timeless elements on words and on music. I think that the way they use old-fashioned clothes and scenery on pictures and videos also helps a lot on that.

you're welcome! I agree with you and my favourite album is probably Dark Side of the Moon for that very reason.

That is a easy question to answer Cancatis...is it the creative writing, the melodic wizardry of the music, the pure genius and talent of the musicians etc...all I can say it is timeless music that I never tire of listening to. "Dark Side Of the Moon" has been played by me countless times...and "Live in Pompeii" well magnificent!...there is not a single album that I do not favor...Too bad most music today hasn't the magic it did in the past...*xXxCLASSICxXx*!!!!

You're very right there, alad! Most of the magic there is because it was NEW music, don't you think? Synthesizers were new, sampling was new, looping was new. All that are very important pieces of Pink Floyd's music. thanks for the comment!

You're absolutely right. Personally I find that nostalgia a very bad or down feeling and that's why Pink Floyd doesn't really make my day. It's great music, but it's about lamenting for something lost, slow and not uplifting. For me it's full of regret. I understand people loving it, but Give me Steve Vai any other day!

Thanks for the comment, Zalvor! I'd like to say that it's all about how we take it. I mean, not to criticize your way of viewing it, but I usually take nostalgia as a "warning" feeling, like "wow, remember when I was really well and now look at me", so as we take a comparison parameter into "ok, I should get things straighten up". Like a "take a look, you're being a bad person" warning that should get you back on the track. Thanks for the response! ^^
