In our office most of my office have two three or more credit cards and I have seen how this have affected their financial standings.
I can see that there are good benefits of having credit cards but the problem comes when we are too dependent on it and have no discipline in the use of the credit card.
I do not plan to own one. I would rather spend in cah rather than get myself hooked on swipping the card everytime I need to buy or to purchase soemthing important.
I am just getting away with the idea that it could be something that could accumulate and could affect me financially in the coming days.
How about you? Do you have a credit card? are hooked with using it?

yes it is very tempting to overuse the credit cards and buy anything you want - or you think you want ...
I would advise against credit cards to anyone who cannot control their spendings
the best way to use a credit card is to be able to pay the balance IN FULL each month or at least as much as you can and NOT just the minimum amount required or your $500 new tv is going to cost you 1,500$!! No kidding ... Use credit cards wisely and as a rule only spend the money you got and only use the credit cards to get the perks (cash back, free flying miles, gas ... )

I have a credit card. I just recently got one. I use to think the same as you, but I got one because it's just needed for so many things. Like car rentals, game rentals even. It makes buying online much easier. On top of that it can really improve your credit score. What we try to do is as soon as we spend on it we pay. So we've charged almost $1000.00 in less than a month, but we've paid the same amount so our amount owing is still 0 dollars!

Yes I do believe there are benefits of owing a credit card. It could help us to buy the very important things in life that we need, i guess its a matter of discipline.

Discipline is important. Credit card is very tempting. We've already fallen into the trap of buying on the credit card when the cash wasn't in the bank. Then when we get paid we have to make sacrifices to pay off the card. We only did that once so far, and I don't think we'll make that mistake again. The paycheque that we had to pay the card off with was very small afterwards!

Used intelligently they can be an asset. However, most things you want to buy nowadays you can use your DEBIT card which takes the money directly from your savings account.

Hi,
I also got a Debit card last year. It's a great way for me to save my money. Although I am so tempted with having a Credit Card, I was looking on it on a different view, and I told myself that it can only burden me in debts. Debit cards is also useful because whenever I go mall shopping, I don't bring cash, I just withdraw in the mall area, so its more secured especially when traveling (I got to travel 2 hours by bus to get in the Davao City, not including the hour spent on commuting by jeepney/taxi.) Besides credit cards, for me, are for those who are financially stable, with good job and can control there spending.

Hello.,zelmarq,I think credit card may be godo if you use it in a proper way,for example,it is very convinient as you do not need to bring so much cash when you want to buy something,it is safer than bring cash, you can buy something when you do not have enough cash at that time. Also you can use yoru credit card to shop online to buy something special.
But it will be veyr dangerous if you misuse it as you do not have to pay untilthe due date,so if you keep shopping ,you may have a credit card bill that you cannot actually afford to repay and you will be in debt then.
I have a credit card but i seldom use it because i seldom buy something expensive,it is better to use cash.

I have like, ten credit cards and so does my boyfriend. It is helpful specially in emergency situations when you don't have cash but I have to admit that I think my boyfriend got carried away swiping coz he's already way behind his credit card bills and two of those are still unpaid. I'm trying to help him go out of this debt and I've been monitoring his use so he doesn't overdo it again.

OH, believe me, you don't want to own a credit card, stay as far away from it as possible so that you won't get buried in bills and debt. LOL.

Years and years ago, we had an excellant credit rating. Credit card companies would send us credit cards to use right and left. We soon learned to live above our means by using credit cards and had quite a few of them. It sneaks up on you. You are making payments and keeping up and it only becomes a problem when one day, all of your money is going out to pay on credit card debt, and the only way you can buy anything at all is by using a credit card! It can become a viscious cycle to get caught up in! Use a debit card if you like, since that comes directly out of your checkbook, but if you can stay away from credit cards, you are better off.

I have a couple of credit cards. I am not hooked on my credit cards. It's all about how you manage your money and having knowledge and educating yourself on credit. You need credit to buy a house, a car, or anything that deals with money. Not having credit says to lending institues that you are not well at managing your money.. and it is harder to get things or apply for things without some type of credit history of at lest 2 years.

Credit cards per se are not evil...you just need to use them wisely. I have 4 credit cards (5 actually because someone sent me another one without me requesting for it but I haven't used it) and although I use them quite regularly, I don't really run into debt or trouble.
I use credit cards for everything: groceries, gas, medicines...anything I can put on credit card, I do. It's my way of budgeting. Because I get bills every month, I see how much of our money goes where. And I do not bring a lot of cash in my wallet. So if they do not accept credit cards, I don't buy. Kinda like the reverse of what you do :).
I make sure, though, that what I buy is something that I can buy with my income. You are really going to be in deep debts if, for example, you earn 10 thousand pesos a month and spend 50 thousand pesos in a shopping spree! Make sure that you have enough discipline to spend only what you can afford to spend.
For gasoline, I have a BPI Petron Mastercard which gives me rebates on my gas purchases.
For my other purchases, I use my other credit cards which give us points which we can exchange for rewards.
I also use my credit card to pay for my computer which I absolutely need but don't have cash to buy. With a 0% installment plan spread out over 12 months (of course I've incorporated it into our budget), it has helped us acquire something we need but wouldn't have afforded if we hadn't used the credit card.
One last thing...and the most important for me. Hospitalizations. For example, we had already prepared 80 thousand pesos when I was about to give birth. But we were hesitant to bring that much money in cash. We paid for the birth using our credit card and paid for it in full as soon as the bill came. It also helped for the hospitalizations of the family members.
I'm a happy credit card user. The key word is "control".

Yes I agree with you my friend. I appreciate your very long and well prepared answer. I just wonder how many minutes it took you to answer this discussion.
The word is control. I will be able to prove my controlling powers when I hae a credit card for myself.

I'm fortunate that I haven't fallen into this trap. I know the power a card gives to the bearer. It's easy to just flash the card and buy anything to your heart's desire, and then later on face the problem of having to pay for the debt you accummulated. It makes one feel rich for a moment, but it gives people the reason to buy beyond their means and to acquire things they barely need. I have lots of offers to apply for a credit card and I've always refused to secure one because I know I have a great tendency and possibility to lose control. I'm an impulsive shopper and I know how much trouble I'd be into if I get one. It's something I definitely can live without. :)

I don't have a credit card. I was tempted to apply for one. But after hearing the financial debts and problem of my friends. I had second thoughts about it. I think to have a credit card, the person should be responsible enough to manage its expenses. And spend within the limits of his financial income. Credit cards are great if you know when, how and where to use it. And of course not to abuse of its swiping power. ~~lol Have a great day Zelmarq! (^^,)

I think the whole thing about credit cards is the level of responsibility you have. If you have the ability to use it as a tool and pay it off every month while still staying within your budget, I say go for it. The problem, though, comes when people start using it as a substitute. They don't have the money now, but they probably will NEXT month, and they really want something NOW. So, they go ahead, get the thing, and keep their fingers crossed that they can pay it off later. This tends to spiral out of control.
I do have one credit card left. I paid off and cut up several more. I spent a long time getting to that point. I will never again go into debt because of a credit card. I will make sure that I only use it within my regular monthly budget. It does make things more conveient! I just refuse to have it take advantage of me again!

I also heard of friends wh have been the same problem and I am glad that that have got out of that financial crisis and I dont want to count myself as one of those who have experienced such. Its enough that I buy for my own expenses with what is only avialable on my pocket.

I have one only. So far, I'm not really hooked using it and the credit card policy nowdays makes me more carefull when using it. And we set a limit amount to it with credit card company.
Anyway, I do need to have one since it is alot easier for me for instance if I want to book a hotel, travelling or flight ticket. It cost even less than if I go to the travel agent and let them do it for me. And I found the insurance for things that I bought with credit card is also quite handy. Because when accidently broken/stolen....I'll report them and get new one. Another thing when I rent a car abroad, most of the time they will need you credit card for a guarantee as I don't want to leave my pasport nor my ID for a guarantee (no way). So, personally it is okay to have a credit card...you just have to set your own limit and use it wisely.

Let me attempt to influence your thinking :P
I am going to highlight why you should use a credit card over cash. Credit card allows you to spend even when you are cashless. You are able to obtain something for which you might regret if you do not get it.
Credit Card enhanced your financial standing. The more cards you have, the higher your purchasing power. The higher your purchasing power, the more people look up to you. The more people look up to you, the more influential you are and become.
Having a credit card no doubt can cause one to be dependent and spend more. Why not make use of the credit card to instil some discipline in yourself and curb your own spending power. The "cash" which you spent out can be used to "roll" in more money while you spent on credit. The item might become free of charge if you are lucky enough :P
So are you game to own a credit card?

Very true whyaskq,it could make you appear to be someone who could buy anything through credit card. You become what you want to appear to people. I am not that conscious when it comes to how I seem to appear or to impress other people. I know where I stand and I could somehow survive without one with only what I have.
Thank you for your reply.
Hope you have a nice day!

Out of curiosity I really wanted to have one. But I never tried applying to have one since am not very financially stable. One day I was surprised when Banco de Oro (BDO) sent me a credit card. Then I started using it. Actually you can manage good credit. No need to get in trouble if you equate credit cards with cash cards. Like everytime you swipe you immediately pay for it.
