Milk Freezable?

United States

Okay I am on WIC and I get more milk than I need for the month but I always need the rest of the stuff on the WIC checks. So most of the times I just don't get the milk because I still have some at home. Well a couple of people think I am crazy not to get it because its on the check and I don't have to pay for it so why not go on ahead and get it. But I am afraid it is just going to go bad. So I was wondering. Can gallons of milk be frozen then thawed and used at a later date? Do you know if this changes the taste of the milk?

I freeze my milk all the time. And i dont notice a change in the taste. Here is what i found on the net as backup :) If you wish to know about storage of any other food they have lots of other suggestions also. link at the bottom. Food Storage, Dairy. From the limited vantage point of my teenage years, I believed it was my grandmother who discovered milk was freezable. To this day, I'm still surprised others know this trick, but the official word is that milk freezes safely for a month, and fresh milk can be kept for five days in the refrigerator. Check the sell date stamped on the side on the container to calculate the five days. Smelling milk is the best minimal involvement way to test for freshness. If it smells neutral, but you still aren't sure it won't curdle in your coffee, take a little taste. Milk keeps best when three factors are observed; cool temperature, reduced exposure to light, and limited contact with air. Refold the spout after pouring milk from a carton, and replace the cap on a milk jug. Leave the container at room temperature as little as possible. Condensed or evaporated milk retains its freshness for 4 or 5 days after the can has been opened. Once opened, it is best to transfer the milk to a nonmetallic sealed container. Unopened, it has a shelf life of 9 months. http://www.cronigsmarket.com/community/storage.cfm

How do you feel about powdered milk? You could ask the WIC office to switch you to powdered milk. Then you wouldn't have to worry so much about waste. If you want to keep getting the regular milk, perhaps you could share it with family or your neighbors. I get WIC also and when we have too much milk, I give some to my mother or we will eat a lot of pancakes that week for breakfast.

Powdered milk is good to use when cooking. You may want to think about getting some.

Powered milk, YUCK!!! I had a friend growing up that had a large family so that is what they drank. No way will I ever drink it again. And, my parents live 40 mins away from me and I only see them about once a month so I would still have to freeze it until I could get it to them.

We have frozen milk before and it was okay. But I'm afraid you might end up with a huge supply of frozen milk one day.lol. I would make lots of pudding or milkshakes.lol. I know you aren't supposed to do this but is there anyone you can give the milk to that might be able to use it?

I don't know that I will get all the milk that wic gives me every month. But I might get a couple more than usual just for back ups incase the current milk goes bad or I run out before my next wic appointment. But I am glad to know that it can be frozen.

Never had to freeze milk Not with having 3 sons growing up at home. thought about buying a cow LOL Keep the lawn short at the same time. My parents used to freeze milk all the time. No idea why cause there was 4 of us at home then They also used to mix up powdered milk for us as well. They would use 1 quart regular milk to 2 quarts of powdered. Never knew the difference till I caught dad mixing it Wendy

When I was 10 my dad fell at work and broke his hip. We had milk delivery back then. In order to save money my mother would order just two half gallons of whole milk and mix it 1 part whole milk to 2 or three parts prepared powdered milk. Nobody cared to drink much of it but we did have hot cocoa almost every morning, lots of hot or cold cereal with milk, pudding once a week, and cheese sauce on our vegetables quite often. And frozen milk... my dad's idea of vacation was to stuff everyone in the family station wagon and go camping. He would freeze a few quarts of milk. These would be used in the ice chest for the first day or so instead of buying block ice. Was always a rude awaking to eat cold cereal the next morning with ice chips in the milk. :-)

i buy a couple of 2 litres milk each time to freeze when i do my shopping, this is because i live on a farm in middle no where so its hard to get milk just whenever it still taste the same but as long as when u thaw it out, u let it complete thaw out not let it get so far and drink some otherwise when u get to the last bit of the milk in the bottle its real watery. because you drink the creamy bits first

Freezing milk does cause some separation among its components. Skim and lowfat milk freeze better than whole milk, as there is less separation. You can shake the thawed milk vigorously or beat it in an electric mixer, but it still will not have the same "mouth feel" as milk that has not been frozen. You might prefer to use previously frozen milk in cooking and baking, and save never-frozen milk for drinking. There is some disagreement on how long you should keep milk in the freezer (ranging from three weeks to three months). Milk readily absorbs other flavors, so the sooner you get to it, the more likely it will still taste like milk. It should be thawed in the refrigerator, and will take a day or more to thaw thoroughly.

As far as I know I believe so because we has fat free milk and it froze because someone had set the refrigerator to a cold setting. You may want to try to get organic milk if possible. I am not sure if that is allowed by WIC, but most organic milk last about 2 times as longer as non-organic milk. Therefore if you could buy 3 gallons and it wouldn't go bad as fast. I think that would be your best option if possible. Have a nice day. Pablo

Yes, i'm pretty sure you can freeze milk - have you thought about letting family or friends buy the extra milk off you (it'd save them a trip to the store) coz then you'd have the extra money incase you run out of something else that you need but cant afford to get. I'm not sure how much a gallon is coz Australia is on the other measurement system but my Aunt used to freeze her milk so i guess it's all good. Or, just pick the milk that has the furthest best before date. I'd try the selling it to family etc though coz i'm sure the extra money would come in handy - rather than just not picking it up. OR, maybe you could try making things that involve more milk - drink it more, make cakes, milk shakes, then it would be used!

Yes gallons of milk can be frozen I too just had baby and am WIC and can relate to the excessive amount of milk given.I asked a WIC rep the same ? she advised me to open the milk pour a little bit out ( less then a 1/2 cup) then place in the freezer. She also stated that milk is good up to 3 weeks frozen, however when frozen for more than 7 days milk start to lose vitamins. In my experience milk frozen for 2 weeks or more taste too watered down. I buy 2 percent milk.

Hey, growing up my mom always froze milk. I honestly never noticed a difference. I say if you get the money for it you may as well get it and freeze it. Esp with the prices of things save where you can.
