How Often Do You Feed Your Cat?

Our cat Wilbur usually eats four or five times a day. I know that sounds like a lot and it may be too much but when he is in the house and gets to meowing and doesn't want to go outside all we have to do is walk toward the room where we keep his food bowl and he goes running. He keeps rubbing against our leg and purring while we get his food and let out a extra MEOWW ever so often while we are getting it out as if to say "Please hurry up!" He doesn't appear to be overweight and I'm hoping it won't come to that because I hate to turn him down when he is hungry. Does your cat eat this often or do you have a set number of times per day that you feed him/her?

I leave the food out for my two cats. They share the same bowls for food and water. I let them eat when they want to eat. I know it's said that they should not have food left out at all times. But I feel that since I am allowed to eat whenever I want to eat that they should be allowed to as well. They do not seem to over eat. Some days they may eat more than others, but so do we.

That is how I feel too. I just can't find it in my heart to feed him on a schedule. If I get hungry I get something to eat. If my kids are hungry I tell them to get them something. Our animals are part of our family and I treat them that way.

I" just let you know. SheliaLee is my mother. Wilbur likes to eat what we call "gravy." I fed him at least four times yesterday morning because he would MEOWW every time the bottom of his food bowl was showing. He finally went back outside, but I was afraid I would make him sick or give him a kitty cat tummyache.

I totally agree. I know we should eat at certain times as well, but honestly sometime you're just not hungry when it would be your scheduled time to eat. I feel it would be cruel to put their food down and then take it away. Maybe they just weren't hungry then. Or at night when we go to sleep. Maybe they are hungry then. They usually only have dry food so leaving it out isn't a big deal. Every so often I will give them wet food. They still love their dry food more. =)

Moomin has breakfast and supper, she is fed twice a day although she does have a bowl with dried cat food as well just incase she fancies a snack. Trouble is the neighbourhood cats also like her snacks. :-)

I understand about the neighborhood cats. That is why we feed Wilbur in the house all the time. We have a cat that showed up at our back door shortly before Thanksgiving and will not leave. If we aren't watching he will slip in the house if the door is open and will make a beeline for Wilbur's food bowl because he has discovered where it is and will eat all that is in it.

I have 3 cats and I usually leave dry food out for them all the time. Then one of my cats I feed her cooked chicken and she is real small. She use to be a stray and now she a member of my family.LOL But I feed her about 3or 4 times aday because I just give small amount. She is real pettite and she was so skinny but not anymore.LOL And my other 2 I feed them a can of moist food in the morning and some tuna fish at night. And I give them alot of treats. Maybe you should give you cat some treats in between meals that might help. Take care

That is good advice. Sometimes if we have scraps from a meal that we think he will eat we will give him that as a treat but sometimes he won't eat that. At times he is a little bit picky.

Wilby - Wilby - greedy but loveable:-))
Oh - my cats are always hungry! LOL! They get a big meal twice a day - morning and evening - but I also always keep dried food down in the kitchen all the time, so they help themselves whenever they feel like it. My Wilby (his real name is William Wilberforce and he sometimes gets called Wilbur too!) is a real greedy boy, and seems to eat 24/7! He did used to be quite overweight, but once the Summer comes, he goes out and runs around much more, and keeps reasonably slim. Lily (our only girl cat amongst all the boys, and the one who is currently in Hospital), is the only one that seems disinterested in food. She is more "picky" than her brothers - she only eats when she is hungry - not out of greed like the rest of them!!

Well as long as he is happy and healthy that is all that matters? Mine have al gone to bed now - think they are trying to tell me something as it's getting late here now!

I love the names of your cats, those are adorable!! Would you believe that Wilbur has already eaten four times just this morning?? But he doesn't appear to be overweight. He is a little bit heavy when I pick him up but he doesn't seem any heavier than usual.

I am currently trying to reduce my cat's comsumption. She has breakfast (if I am late she smacks up side the head with her paw) and supper. I will leave a bowl with a small amount of food in it throughout the day, but none at night. Since starting this routine, her activity has increased. I still can't help but give her some snacks just little ones though.

I keep a bowl of food out for Wilbur all the time too. He doesn't eat all day long, it is just that when he comes in from having been outside chasing mice and other critters out in the field behind our house that he realizes he is hungry. This may be three or four times per day. Then if he has been outside all night he usually shows up at the door in the morning between 5:30 and 6:00 ready to come in and eat.

I never tried feeding my cats on a schedule. Right from the start, when they were kittens, I'd put out a huge bowl of dried food that they could eat from whenever they wanted. I usually don't feed "wet" food, but when I do it's just as a treat. I know in some cases if you just put out food like I do, you end up with an overweight cat because he keeps eating and eating. I think that since I started this practice while I had kittens, it may be the reason I didn't have this problem. I'm glad about that because it's certainly an easier way to feed the cat!

We give Wilbur his "gravy" as a treat from time to time too. He lets us know when he wants it too. If he goes to his bowl and we show him it has plenty of food in it but he still turns away then he is telling us he wants gravy. When we open a pack and pour it over the dry food then he will eat. He is more than a little bit spoiled, Ha! Ha!

All I have to do to see if Wilbur wants his gravy is to see if he will rub his head against the packet, and if that happens, that is how I know he wants his gravy.

Cats are creatures of habit, once you start with one schedule they like to stay with it. I feed by cats (2 cats) three to four times a day, so don't feel bad. I keep dry food for them all the time in a feeder and their water is the same way. I give them wet food from a can, 2 in the morning, one at noon and one more at 5:00 and another one around 8:30 (since they are begging so much by then), my cats are very spoiled so don't feel bad, I have tried to cut them back but no matter what I do this is least amount I can feed them, they actually would like to be feed more, but I hate to waste food where they are concerned.

We don't keep a bowl of water in the house for Wilbur, just a bowl of dry food that he can easily get to. But we have a bowl outside that always has water in it so that he can get plenty to drink.

I appreciate your response. At first I thought we might be feeding Wilbur too much but everyone who has responded is saying that they keep dry food out during all times so I think I'm doing the right thing. I just can't stand to not feed him if he appears to be hungry.

Well, I keep a bowl of dry food in the kitchen all the time for her. I know I'll probably get stoned for this but I also give her tuna 2-3 times a day. She loves it. I know...ppl say it isn't good for her. She is in great health and has no problems. She only eats the "in water" type and loves it. She is her proper weight and still eats her dry food as well. She will come and meow nicely a time or two and then if she hasn't gotten her treat she will nip my ankle and meow loudly to let me know she NEEDS it. lol. LIVE IN PEACE

That's funny. Cats have a way of getting us trained to do what they want. All of my cats train me according to their wants.

You shouldn't have to set an amount, you really should know. Ask any VET & they will tell you, you are only supposed to feed your pets once a day. My cats get a handful of dry food in the morning & a spoonful of home made food in the afternoon when i feed the dogs. It works out pretty well but i know i shouldn't feed them more than once. Have you tried just using one of those self feeding things, that'd save you time & he wont bother you until you feed him if he can always have access to it. I think dry food is ok for a feed but the tin/cooked food you give them really should only be once a day. Good luck!

Thanks so much for that advice. Wilbur always has access to his food, he knows right where it is, but it almost as though he wants us to lead him to it anyway. He is more than a little bit spoiled, Ha! Ha!

My cat, Noodles, eats all the time, but right now she is nursing five kittens and probably has worms. Maybe Wilbur has worms, have you had him checked? Especially since he is an outdoor cat, if he is eating that much and not gaining weight, it's a strong possibility.

We haven't yet but it is getting fairly close to time for his yearly checkup at the vet. I need to make sure they check him for that at that time.

I have a cat that's a Tom cat. He's not house domestic and likes the large outdoors we have. He lovs hunting around the yard more than eating Process cat food. Strange cat loves live kills.

That is interesting. Wilbur will catch a mouse, though, and I have seen him catch a bird. The odd thing about him is that the people who owned him before we did had him declawed on his front paws. But he is still a great mouser.

I have two cats and I just have two bowls of food setting out all the time. And they eat when they want. Neither of them appear to be overweight either.

Hi terri! It is really hard for me to tell, but I don't think Wilbur is overweight. He is a tad bit on the heavy side when we pick him up, which isn't very often because he doesn't like it, LOL. But I don't think he is overweight even though he does eat quite a bit. He stays outside most of the time hunting for mice so it keeps him from getting too big, LOL. :)

I have many, many cats so I tend to go through a lot of catfood. It seems like I am always filling up a food or water dish.I have two double dishes in my house and I fill them both up at least once a day. The one out here in the dining room gets filled several times a day because it is used by more cats. The other dish is in another room that my more antisociable cats like to eat from. I have a few that like to eat the dogfood too.lol.

That sounds like a good idea. We keep dry food in Wilbur's food bowl all the time but from time to time we give him "gravy", a moist cat food pouch. He really likes those too.

We feed our four cats dry food which we leave out for them to eat whenever they want. I check it during the day and fill the bowl when it gets empty. Once a day they get some canned food. We only open one small can and divide it four ways, so they can't overeat the canned food. Our cats are stictly indoor cats, so they don't run around outside, but they don't overeat, either.

That is a neat way of feeding them the canned food. How many cats do you have? Wilbur is our only one that is actually ours but there is one that showed up at our door shortly before Thanksgiving.

My cats are fed twice a day, for breakfast they have dry food and for tea they have wet food. And I'll always leave some biscuits in their bowls during the night incase they fancy a midnight snack. Max used to want to be fed three times a day but now he's grown and loves to spend all day outside.

I have four cats and they are all indoor cats. I usually keep my bowl full of dry cat food 24/7 as all the cats have a different agenda as to when they like to eat. It would drive me nuts to go according to each one of there schedules so i keep the dish filled with dry and once a day at a set time i feed them all some wet food. The easiest way i know for multiple kittys lol. Just like kids they are.

It sounds like you have it figured out well. I would love to have more than one cat in the house but my husband wouldn't go for it. I like to have never talked him into letting Wilbur come in to the house. He didn't grow up with animals in the house and is why he feels that way. His mother is still that way and it really bothers her when she comes to our house and the cat is in. But it is our house so she can't say anything.
