Do your kids get an allowance?

Do you give your kids an allowance? If so, what do you give them (and what age are they)? When did you start giving them the allowance? What do they have to do to get it? I just started giving one to my 5-year-old. It's 4 quarters a week and I expect her to save half of it for the bank and she can have the other half to buy what she wants. She has chores she has to do each week and I do expect her to do them before she gets the allowance.

We don't give my son an allowance because we see chores as something that he does to help maintain the household. He has a good bit of pocket money on his own with birthday and other gifts through the year. My son knows that if he behaves (at home and in school) and keeps room and bathroom clean that we do things he want to do. I believe that is reward enough.

My children get an allowance based on how well they do in school. I think that school is my childrens jobs so if they do well at school I pay them. My almost nine year old is given ten dollars a week for completeing all of her homework and to bring home good grades. My severn year old gets seven dollars if he does the same. My youngest child is in pre school so we only give him a couple of dollars so that he knows that school is important.

I have given my children an allowance before and do it the same as you but we always end up where we stop the allowance thing as I always run into the same problem where the children will only do what needs to be done if they want money for something . It always works for a little while and then we give up and try again at a later time . I want my children to understand that in life we do not always get paid for doing things we don't like or don't want to do and that they still have to do things without getting paid for it but I can't seem to get them to understand this :)

I think pocket money /allowance is good idea - it teaches children to do chores or help around the place and get rewarded..my little boy is only two but he already likes to help with things..I won't start paying him too young though..
