How to "rest your mind" to keep away insomnia?

My insomnia is most often caused by stress...I have too many things zipping around in my mind and it's too hard the quiet them down. Because of this I can predict when I will have insomnia, and it would be nice to try to do something to prevent it. I am wondering if any of you have some habits, meditations, or tips on how to quiet your mind before going to sleep. I figure maybe if I had some kind of ritual I did before I go to sleep on the nights I know I am stressed, it might help me have insomnia less.

First of STOP PREDICTING WHEN U WILL NOT BE ABLE TO SLEEP... if the first thing u do when you lay down is say to yourself... "Tonight is gonna be awful i'll never get to sleep" then chances are your gonna stress about that then stress about why you need sleep then start stressing about EVERYTHING... I was hospitalized at one point for being up for days at a time with NO sleep at all and I pretty much had the same problem my mind would be racing and racing and i couldn't clear it enough to go to sleep... My nighttime ritual is pretty much forcing my body to relax... i did yoga and meditation but even then sometimes my mind would wonder so now everynight before i sleep i write... anything... a story, what i'm stressing about, even something like what i want to dream about tonight when i sleep... then i put on relaxing sounds like soft classical music or sounds of the ocean or forest and i just close my eyes and focus on the sounds until i drift off to sleep... also i don't allow myself to get up for ANY reason... It all may sound like to much work just to sleep but believe me u don't want to end up staying awake so long that it is a danger to your health and u have doctors pumping u with sedatives to try and get u to sleep. I hope i'm helping and not just droning on... although who knows maybe u just need a bunch of useless words on a computer screen to help u sleep... good luck.

Thanks for the advice. I really ike your idea of writing things down. That seems like a good activity to take part in. I'm so sorry to hear about your hospitalization. That sounds like no fun.

i suggest a warm bath. they're very helpful for relaxation. i also suggest a noise machine of some sort.although, most of the time i put on music or the tv to lull me to sleep.

Actually I do have a white noise machine. I love it. Maybe music would be a good idea though, so I can focus on that when my mind starts getting wound up. I used to take more baths, but I got out of the habit. I should try to get back into it though.
