The DIctionary of Cultural Literacy notes that the Bible is "the most widely known book in the english-speaking world... no one in the english-speakin world can be considered literate without a basic knowledge of the Bible" (Hirsch, Kett and Trefil,1988,p.1) In Britain it was rated as one of the top 50 most-interesting books. In the U.S. it is perenially a best seller and the single book that Americans say has most infuenced their lives. The Bible is qouted by people of all walks of life including statesmen, politicians, philisophers, poets and even astronauts.
