i've been a sports fanatic and even in movies, i love to watch sports themed movies. my favorite so far is 'coach carter' starring samuel jackson. its a story of a high school basketball coach who doesnt just care about the team's status, but also for the players academic performance. it was clear in the movie that life is not just all about basketball and having fun. theres more to that. life is all about having dreams and taking responsibility for yourself. the movie have great lessons, it also taught us that winning basketball games is not everything, there are more bigger things than that. in the movie they lost to the team that had the best player in their division, a game which they should've won. but in the end, most of their players became changed men and most of them ended up having college degrees. some had successful basketball careers and everybody became successful in their respective fields. whats your favorite sports themed movie? please share some lessons about the film too

I love to watched the movie "The Mighty Ducks".It was made in a time when comedies about kids and sports were probably among the most popular kinds of movies, The Mighty Ducks is the undisputed best of any of these. (Other favorites of mine include The Sandlot and Little Giants.) The plot isn't complicated, as many have said, Gordon Bombay is an overworked lawyer who gets a DUI charge and is given community service, coaching a kids hockey team of misfits. The difficulty in this is Gordon played hockey himself as a kid, and blew a championship game. Without giving too much away, Gordon teaches the kids hockey, and they teach him to not take life too seriously. What makes this movie special is really the portrayal of the kids. Sure they sort of fall in to stereotypes, the goofy fat kid, the short but tough kid, the misunderstood "bad" kid, the lovable and sweet underdog (Charlie Conway, played by Joshua Jackson, pre Pacy, although in the Ducks sequels you see shades of that character coming out!) but these characters feel real, and are very funny. I don't know if younger kids still watch this movie but if you ask any teenagers who Goldberg is you'll get a laugh and some fun reminiscing. Not to mention they often know the correct moments for quacking (not when getting yelled at by your principal!) All in all definitely worth watching, if only for a trip down memory lane!

I agree on your choices as well! The sandlot is such a favorite in our house! My son (who's 8) can watch it over and over again. :) We'll have to take a trip to the video store to get the mighty ducks. I bet he'd love that one, too!

I just loved The Longest Yard, the original movie with Bert Reynolds. I thought it was a great movie when it first came out and to this day when I watch it I still find it hilarious!

Adam Sandler's movie is actually a remake of the originaly one that whywiki is talking about. The Bert Reynolds one is a much better movie as far as the acting goes. The Adam Sandler version is OK, but they tried to take a comedic angle to it, and it just didn't work for me. :)

It's funny, I hate base ball but my favorite sports movie is "The Natural". There is just so much more going on than the baseball. Also, I couln't let a sports movie thread pass bu without mentioning "Slap Shot"....an absolute classic, and funny no matter how many times you see it.

I usually love sports themed movies, so instead of one I am going to give you three of my choices: 1) Lagaan - An Hindi movie about the story of a set of villagers who need to learn the game of cricket and play it against their oppressive British rulers whom them must defeat in order to avoid taxes. The movie stars Aamir Khan in the lead role. 2) Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar - Another Aamir Khan movie where in a good for nothing son fulfills his father's dream of winning a cycle race. 3) Jerry Mcguire - Though not a complete sport themed movie, sports was a side track in the movie. But, I did like the movie very much especially the "Show me the Money" part. Cheers! Ram

I like the The Miracle movie starring Kurt Russel. The inspiring story of the team that transcended its sport and united a nation with a new feeling of hope. Based on the true story of one of the greatest moments in sports history, the tale captures a time and place where differences could be settled by games and a cold war could be put on ice. In 1980, the United States Ice Hockey team's coach, Herb Brooks, took a ragtag squad of college kids up against the legendary juggernaut from the Soviet Union at the Olympic Games. Despite the long odds, Team USA carried the pride of a nation yearning from a distraction from world events. With the world watching the team rose to the occasion, prompting broadcaster Al Michaels' now famous question, to the millions viewing at home: Do you believe in miracles? Yes!

"The Natural" with Robert Redford and "Field of Dreams" with Kevin Costner. I love baseball, and these two movies have such a great story that go along with it. I'm also from the midwest (Iowa) so it holds just a little more special interest there. "Is this heaven? No, It's Iowa!"

i am a big basketball fan, i just love this game. movies like coach carter, he's got game and even space jam i don't mind watching them over and over again to the point where i can memorize every line in that movie. though i have watched movies like the longest yard and the mighty ducks movies, i still enjoy basketball movies more since i can relate and understand that game with all my heart. i have been playing it since i was 7 years old. i have been in playing for different leagues and games already. i don't wanna brag about it but i think i am quite good after all i already won 2 most valuable player awards ever since i have started and numerous mytical five awards. now enough of me, going back to the topic. coach carter is definitely a movie worth watching not because of the great games and plays but because of the lessons you can learn. college is one valuable option for every kid, especially those black-american. going to college will open a lot of doors and opportunities. yes they are those that turn pro even after high school but they are only a few who can make that transition from high school to the big league. when players don't get drafted, where do they go? thats why having a college diploma in your hands can give you a better future. you work as a team, you suffer as a team. basketball after all is a team's sport.
