I read the book first and I thought it was absolutely fantastic!!!! I then watched the film just to see the costumes really because I knew that it wasn't going to be as good as the book because of the detail! I mean the film was about 2 and half hours long and it had missed chunks of it out... what are your views?

Whoa! That's a favorite pastime for folks who read. Normally it's bashing the films for things like miscasting and story desecration, but every once in a while you end up with a film maker who's made a silk purse out of a sow's ear or at least remained faithful to the original mood and story. There's nothing wrong with comparing the two. As for the original question, I haven't seen the film but I agree that the novel is so involved that there is no way to make a movie that encompasses the whole story. I do want to see those costumes, though. Was it as gorgeous as you expected?

Hi thank you! Erm yes the costumes and make up was amazing, I was trying to picture how it would look while reading the book, although the descriptions in the book were excellent.. you could almost imagine it, but I wanted to see it for real.

I read the book first as well. Then they went and made a movie of it. I held off and held off because like you I know that all movies made from books are horrible. Well, it was a Saturday night and I was bored so I decided to finally rent it because I'd hear that it was actually quite good. I watched it and my opinion it was slow and BORING!!! It didn't have the emotion and the feel of the book! They cut some very good parts out of it. I didn't like the movie at all.

Yeah watchin the film you kept expecting something to happen, then it didn't but it was quite a long film anyway, it would have been really hard to get anymore in it and get to the ending...

I meant to say, I loved Memoirs too. I saw the movie first, because I was waiting to borrow the book from my son. It was a good book and the movie was pretty close to the book, and very well done. Anyway, I hope you have fun here at Mylot.

I watched the film, but honestly great cinematography but the story is quite common - there is nothing reat about it. I first read the book, great story, very lovely (funny, romantic, a total tear jerker) but the a sudden flop to the ending. I never said that I hated both the book and the film, but 3 years prior to the film, I always wanted that book because I thought it's great. And would go to the book rather than the film.

The book was amazing but I didnt enjoy the movie like I did the book. In the book things seemed so deep and magical almost and in the movie it was just kind of like blah. I knew what was going on from reading the book but it just didnt seem as touching as the movie. What really shocked me was that nobu-san the guy who was injured in the war in the book was missing an arm but in the movie he was not. I was like wow thats not right they needed to try to make it look like the guy in the film didnt have an arm but they didnt bother. I expected the kamonos to be much fancier as well.

the film failed to show some important scenes about the becoming of a geisha, of the lead role. the movie focused much on the lovestory
