I had a thought...what do you think?

When our dogs go for a walk, they sniff every bush, every clump of grass, every tree, because dogs like to know who has been by there and they're looking for a spot to mark. Anyway, I was thinking... is that why they come in and drink out of the toilet? Not just for the cold water, but to see who else has been to the house? I never minded the dogs drinking out of the toilet. It saves me from needing to keep a bowl of water on the floor. When they dribble, it only takes a second to clean up. I never saw the big deal, no one is asking me to drink out of it. Anyway again, I can put fresh cold water out for my dogs but as soon as I let them in, they head for the bathrooms. So I was thinking that they had another reason for it. When people visit people, they sometimes use the bathroom, and leave a scent that maybe dogs pick up to tell them who has visited. Does that make any sense?

Anything is possible, even my theories. I keep telling people that, but they still think I'm nuts. Well, what can you do? I throw them out there and people either agree with them or they argue. The thing is, noone really knows, the dogs aren't talking. So I stick with my ideas until they are proved otherwise.

Take care of what?? The bacteria fighting stuff in my dogs saliva takes care of it for me. We are exposed to germs everyday and a completely sterile environment is worse than bacteria exposure. If our immune system doesn't get anything to fight, it will get weak and forget how to work, then when it's attacked by bacteria, it loses. That doesn't sound like good advice, so I will stick with what I know.

I know what you mean aabout the sniffing. It drives me up a wall but no matter how hard I try it is impossible to stop it. To lessen the problem I sometimes use a different route where not many dogs go....unless they are not on a leash. As for your bathroom thesis it does have it's merits except for the fact that visitors use other parts of the house more than the bathroom and, spending more time in other rooms would leave a longer lasting scent.
You must have big dogs or a low toilet. It would be impossible for our poodle to drink for it because he is so small. Even if he could jump to the rim I think he would probably miss and wind up in the bowl with the possibility of drowning.

Well, it's definitely colder, that's for sure. Animals are strange, and usually too smart for their own good. They know what they like, so who am I to say 'no'???

They do it simply cause it's cold and stays cold.
Thats it no mystery. The water in a bowl reaches room tempature and dogs prefer colder water. The water in the toilet will always be colder and once they discover that, they will drink out of the toilet.

Humans don't secrete the same pheromones that a dog does when he eliminates. Dogs are hardwired to be able to "read" the pheromones of his species. Your toilet is merely a water fountain, and a potentially unhealthy one at that! So close your lid and continue to put fresh water on the floor for your pups.
