Yelled at in an interview

I had an interview at a local bank today and the woman who was interviewing me actually yelled at me! She asked me to tell her about a time when I got a customer calling to complain I told her one didn't stick out because we get one or two a day so she yelled at me for having bad customer service. Talk about not getting the job. She made me cry! Can you believe this?

You might have blown it. :( This is one tactic of interviewers. She might have yelled at you on purpose, just so that she can see how you react to pressure. If you had kept your cool and deal with it as professionally as possible, you would have got the job. Of course, she might be just having a bad hair day. This tactic is not that new. I yell at my school juniors while interviewing them for exco positions too. :P

yep, i agree. some interviewers just might want to shake your composure then watch you how to deal with it. sometimes they use joking or teasing to see how your going to deal with that.

This is why it's best to work for a MAN. Seriously, she shouldn't have yelled at you for that and it's unprofessional to do so. If she didn't like your answer, she should've just gone about the interview like normal and throw out your papers.

I'd say that if this is a common interview tactic (in the US I presume, this doesn't happen in Europe) then it doesn't matter if it was a woman or a man, a man would have done the same. I agree it's unprofessional though.

Oh MY. I am shaking my head. No, I cannot say that I have ever been yelled at during an interview. It's okay hon, you didn't want to work for someone like that in the first place. How rude! That woman has bad customer service skills and shouldn't be interviewing anyone. I wonder if her supervisors know that she is making their bank look bad. I think I would call and file a formal complaint with her managerial staff if I were you. That's awful. Sorry you had to bear the brunt of her bad manners and interview.

You don't want to work for that company with that kind of treatment prevalent. Much better to go elsewhere. Ignore her and get another job and don't feel less for it. I would not have let her see me cry, not worth encouraging her bad behavior. Good luck in your job search.

I'd say you were lucky. You wouldn't want to work for her and be yelled at all the time would you? Nope! She doesn't sound like a very nice person to work for or with. I also think it is unprofessional for her to act like this and expose this kind of behavior in an interview. She had no right to yell at you. How can she judge when she doesn't know the situation of your previous job? Good luck in your search.

I have to agree with a couple of the responses...i have heard this is a common interview tactic and working at a bank can be very stressfull (hubby has worked at a credit union for years) you deal with the public and well you meet all kinds :-) but i also have to agree, that maybe you wouldn't want to work for her anyways!! lol

I hope you don't end up working there! That is abusive behavior on the part of the interviewer. I am sorry you had to go through that. I have worked in situations like that and taken abuse that no one should have to take. I don't understand where people like that are coming from. Could it be a major power ego thing? You will find a great job and be thankful it isn't with someone like that. Good luck!

That may be a common practice in interviews, but I've never heard of it. I think it sounds downright rude. Some positions have to deal with people who are upset a lot. What about collections people? They always have people yelling at them. Does that mean the individual didn't have good customer service skills? No. Be glad you didn't get the job. It doesn't sound like a good work environment. You should call that ladies boss and tell them that SHE is lacking in her customer service skills. LOL!

I CAN! I havent gotten yelled at. But I did have an interview with a Jamba Juice near my house in 2004. The MEAN nasty manager pretty much scolded me harshly enough I cried afterwards. He told me I didnt have what it took to work there, was upset and scolded me for not moving up at my former job (of 4yrs) and a bunch of other crap. I later learned two managers worked there, I got the mean of the two. Sucks for me! So I feel for you. Some people are nasty. Be glad you didnt get hired then! That lady had NO right though. You didnt have a reply because you didnt have one. Why does that make you having BAD customer service?

That is horrible. I don't know what I would do if that had happened to me. She sounds like someone who shouldn't be doing interviews. With that kind of interviewing tatics, she is sure to scare people off. She needs a dose of being unemployed and dependant on someone for a job. You should report her to the branch office.

Catcha. They got you. I would see it as a intentional test to see how you would respond or react in real live. Perhaps this particular skillset is something the job requires critically and they had to get you at it!. You might have gotten the job if you had remained calm and composed and yet smile while being yelled... LOL. Personally, I would not want such a job.

LordWarWizard hit it right on the button. I spent a year in a bank and you get yelled at pretty much everyday, it would actually be advisable for an interviewer to find out how you handle the pressure of having someone yell at you. Smart move on her part, and you learned something.

that's just terrible. how do you yell at someone you are interviewing? it's probably a good thing, you aren't working for someone who's going to put so much stress and anxiety on you like that

I've never heard of anything like that happening before! If I was angry enough, i think I would have said,'you're such a b$tch' and walked out myself!..no way would i want to work with someone like that.

Wow .. maybe there is a reason why they have an opening. I will never say that I am the best boss in the world but jeez, at least hire the person and get them on the payroll before you start making them cry :]

Thats really Messed Up! She was trying to see How You handle stressful situations. But She went by doing it in a unprofessional way. She should not be interviewing people at all.

Hmm, this kind of sounds to me like an underhanded technique for seeing how you react to pressure. I know some employers do things like that. On the other hand she might just be a b!tch, which means you wouldn't want to work for her anyway. Actually making you cry during an interview isn't nice or fair though and really, no matter what, she shouldn't have yelled at you like that. I'm sorry you had to go through something like that, hopefully you'll find something better in terms of a job. Good Luck.

HAhah. You were caught off guard. I think that is just her style of interviewing. She just wants to see you r reactions and how would you handle concerns of customers. If you have surpassed that one. I guess you are hired by now.It was a test. you should have been strong and did it in a nice way. Goodluck!

thats unfortunate. i wouldnt want that to happen to me.they either were having a bad day or they used it as a tactic to measure your response to the situation. but you should probably be able to tell just by the intensity of the yelling. if she was faking it, it would sound fake. but then again, some people are good at acting. http://darkzzt.blogspot.com/
