Public education in the state of Wisconsin enjoys a great reputation. That reputation does NOT extend to the Milwaukee Public Schools.
In the last 3 days there were 6 separate incidents of violence.
In two incidents, riots broke out. Students used their cell phones to call their parents. There parents came to the rescue... by joining in the rioting.
40% of the calls to the Milwaukee Police Department are for violence or other criminal activity at MPS schools.
MPS High Schools brag that 2.5 of every 5 students are literate... they brag because that is up from 2 of every 5.
The truancy rate at MPS high schools is 75%.
The graduation rate is 40%.
The school board just voted down a new policy that would allow security workers to restrain violent students with flex cuffs until police arrive. They are worried that restraining Black kids might bring on images of slavery.
When asked what they are going to do about the problems, MPS officials merely state that they need more money.
MPS already spends more than $10,000 per student. Milwaukee County is the only county in Wisconsin that receives tax money from ALL counties in Wisconsin.
Milwaukee county already has a school voucher system. It limits the number of vouchers that can be issued each year. The state needs to open the vouchers so that any parent who wants their kids out of the MPS meat grinder.
As long as the thugs and gang bangers are forced to be in the schools there will be no educational opportunities for any student.

I have spent my working life in the public schools and an one of the few educators that feel the vouchers are the answer to getting better public schools. I like President Regans idea and that is that the voucher becomes a contract between the parent and the school. The schools havd an obligation and the parent agreed to do certain thing to make sure the students followed the rules. For education to be successful the parents must be involved and encouraging the student. This is why private schools are successful if the parents are not cooperative or if the student does not follow the rules they can be asked to leave and not have to go through the due process. Education is important but the State can not be responsible to see that the student learns it is up to the parent.

Exactly, education only happens when Parents, Students and Teachers are all working together. In Milwaukee Public Schools there are so many kids and parents who would rather fight and administrators who would rather make excuses.
MPS is a total failure and has become little more than institutionalized abuse of the few kids who want to learn something.
