Why do we need to submit tags?

Hi mylotters,
Why do we need to submit tags? Is it related to a search engine? I can understand if we need to submit tags when starting and replying a discussion. But why should we submit tags when we are sending a private message? Have you noticed it? What is the purpose of tags in the private messages?

I think it is more to do with the fact the the starter of each discussion may not have thought about a certian interest thet the discussion could fit inot. I know when it comes to my submitting a tag after responding I don't do it if they have thought of each interest I have as well so I just press skip. I still get paid for it, my response still gets posted.

The previous did a good job answering your questions but I wanted to say that I don't always submit tags and it doesn't affect my earnings so it's a matter of whether or not you wanted to make it easier for others to find your post on the topic you talked about.
