Mind, Body, And Soul.

I am a freshman in College and I take a philosophy class. Well we have here in the recent past learned about the whole mind/body Theory. We have quite a number in the class and I've heard what almost everyone of them has to say. Now I'd like to hear what you guys say. If there is a soul, where is it housed? If your brain were put into another body would you still have your memories, or the memories of the person who's body your brain now inhabits? What makes you, who you personally are? Our teacher gave us this as an example. If your car got new parts would it still be the same car? If your car got a new paint job would it be the same car? Or if over time piece by piece the whole cars parts got replaced would it still be the same car?

I feel that the mind and body is a relationship between two distinct entities, which for a duration of life have become associated with each other, but can also exist seperately. Thus being said, your sould, if there is one, would be housed in your mind. Once mind and body seperate your mind would still live on and your body would die. I feel that if your mind were put into another persons body then you would still have the memories. Your mind is what makes you who you are, not your body. That is where the saying comes from, "It's not what's on the outside that couns." A person is who they are because of what's on the inside, not because they have a great body.

Well that is a good thought but where is your "mind" housed? In your brain? If so then how can your mind seperate from something that is a solid? And if it's not the body that counts then why do people say "Oh you don't look like yourself today"? Or "They are not acting themselves today." What makes that person themself? Their actual self, and with an alzhimers patient what about them, their brain breaks down so where does their "mind" go in the meantime? Because sometimes they can remember everything and others they can remember nothing at all.

The soul is housed right behind your heart right before your spine. This is my thought at least.

Well... If there is a soul, I'd say it's housed within the whole body. I don't knwo i just get this image that when someone loses their soul that its a complete copy of the whole body but the Opacity almost unknowable. Make sense? Maybe the cartoons get the best of me, but that's what I think. =P Now if my brain was put into someone else, then I suppose they would in turn have mine. Memories are like little cell blocks that hold your memories. And if your brain goes... they go. I think that new brain holder or whatever, if they could use the new brain right then they would then see your memories. That would be freaky as hell. That's what I think.

I gotta think that the mind and heart are both weaved with the soul. I know the mind controls most of your body, like that's what makes your hand move and all, but does it tell your heart to beat? There is that feeling that comes from your chest when you hurt or when you love. And sometimes an instinct that comes from where? I know that your brain releases certain chemicals that can control mood, but can it release that part of us that has morals? Even in a horrific environment some children feel the difference in them and have a sense of morals that the people in their surroundings do not. With the same token, a child raised in a caring home can turn out differently. I don't know, but this is a fantastic brain teaser!

Wow this is a tough question shauna. I would think its in the mind. Cause the mind is what controls your body, your moods, your everything. If you took your mind, and put it in another body, your still you, only in a different shell. Like a car, the parts, including the body, is what makes the shell. If you remove the engine, however, it will not run. LIke the brain, if you remove it, the body becomes a shell. I hope i answered it okay ^^

haha um no...actually the motor was changed before I ever knew of the cars existance. Which brings up another point, if you do not percieve of something does it just not exist? Like I did not percieve of my car before I knew of it. I am no car killer I love my car more then my own brain :( lol.

That's a very good theory Kiwi, thanks for the insight! That is a very good way to look at it actually! But what if you replace the engine, will it still be the same car though? Like my little ol'car, it's engine has been replaced but does it change the car in itself?
