I grew up in the 60's and 70's and I always used phrases like heavy, groovy right on and cool. I still use then alot and I get some strange looks sometimes from some of the younger guys I work with. It got me kind of wondering, Am I the only one that uses these phrases any more? Am I the only throw back to the 70's around here? Can you dig it?

I was born in 1981 and I still use 70's words I'm not sure why I suppose because I know a few people who still do. I also watch a lot of movies and listen to music from that era so that's bound to have an influence.

Well, the people you hang with, the movies you watch all have an influence on how you percieve things and theres nothing wrong with that. the seventies were much simpler times. Thank you for your response!!

Thats cool, I guess every generation has their own slang. Some people change with the times, some dont. I dont think I've changed much at all since the late seventies. Thank you for your response!

I use groovy a lot. That's kind of sad in a way, because I wasn't even born until 1980. I have no idea why I like that word, but I do. The thing that I say that people think is old-fashioned is "lovely". I am far more likely to say "Have a lovely day" than "Have a nice day" and people think it's strange. I've been told I sound like someone's grandmother a LOT.

That's exactly how I feel, Transdisc! Everyone says nice! My coworkers say "Have a nice day" all day long, and half the time no one even responds to it because they hear it all the time. But if I say "lovely" people smile and act surprised and feel like I was really geniune with them, which I am of course. =)

I dont really see anything sad about someone saying groovy. When you use a term that people dont hear every day they tend to take notice. They will either think your wierd or really genuine. Either way it will make you stand out which is part of the reason I still use them. Have a lovely day and thank you for your response!!

I don't use those phrases, I was a teen in the 90's so I say "not!" and "awesome" a lot. I know what you're talking about, my mom was around back then-did I just make you feel old? lol Didn't mean to ;)

LOL! I love this discussion! I grew up in the 60s and 70s too, and I still use "right on" and "cool" too. I also use "neat" and "neat-o". My kids look at me like I've totally lost it, and actually call me a dork. But.....I catch them using the phrases every once in a while. So I know they picked them up from good ol' mom. LOL

Oh my gawd, your making me feel old when you brought up Patty duke. Either tough was slang or the steak was tough. LOL. I think RAD was popular in the eighties. I seem to remember some of my younger friends useing it alot back then. I tink I say Far Out more than anything else. Just something that stuck with me all those years. Tank you for your response!!

Well, these are not really used slangs anymore...but then again - the current generation doesn't have any "cool" or "groovy" slangs. They do a lot of retro stuff with 70's and 80's music - even some 60's stuff - but I don't think they know it is retro :)

Lots of our era around. You should see the looks I get when I use flibbertygibbet, which my mother used to use about me. I guess I didn't sit still a lot as a kid. I think our parents and elders probably thought we were young morons back then. :)

I grew up in the 60's and 70's too and I still use these phrases and get those weird looks too. People I know are from that era and some of them use these phrases and we know what we mean when we say them. But some of the younger ones look at us like are you talking a different language or what? But then I lived in Mass and they use pisser when something is cool or good. I got a giggle out of that when I first heard someone say that something was pisser. Bet they get giggles out of the way we talk when we say something is cool.

Believe me, you're not the only one. In fact, where I live some of the kids use cool and far out. I think "That 70s Show" has a lot of kids using the old stuff. I prefer "farm out" which, I think, Mad Magazine started. I really get looks from that. I use "that'll work" a lot, and of course some of the newer stuff. Here in West Virginia "Git 'er done" is very popular. I loved the 70s. I can't bring to mind a particular phrase at this point, but I use stuff my father and mother used when I was growing up, and I'm 65, so it's not just a 70s thing.
