How do you feel about how much time NFL Teams take to draft players?

I do not feel that NFL teams need 15 minutes to draft people in the first round. I think that is too much time. They should only need about five minutes since they have already done their scouting of players weeks or months ago so they should already have an idea of who to draft or who might still be left. How do you feel about the time it takes to pick players?

I think 15 minutes is perfect, and you're seeing why in this draft. First of all, sometimes, unexpected things happen in the draft. You could have a board that has the top 100 players available ranked for your team... but let's say you are picking 12th, like Buffalo. You have a need, a specific need, but there is a dynamic player available. Now, you're suddenly stuck with a very important position of need vs. best player available. With as much that is invested in these players, 15 minutes is more than an adequate amount of time to give a team the chance to decide... let's take it one step further. What if a pllayer begins to slide (a la Brady Quinn), now there might be teams looking to trade up or down depending on which players are left. Let's say someone you wanted is gone, and now teams are offering enticing things just to move into your draft pick. Do you make the trade? or do you make the pick for someone high on your board? What if the clock is running and another team is feeling the pressure to make a move... they might sweeten the deal... could you pull an extra pick or two? What id the person you target is dropping... do you trade up? The point is... 15 minutes is more than enough time... in the later rounds, you are only given 5 minutes anyways, but the dollars in play, and the variations, there is a need for the complete 15... besides, these teams usually don't need the full 15, it's more for the wheelin' and dealin' that they could do...

Those are definitely very good points, especially with this draft as there have been some very unexpected moves. I know this draft affected my Eagles because the players they wanted were taken by the time their spot came up. They had to rethink things over. Are you happy so far with the 49ers draft? The Eagles have not selected yet but was not thrilled trading with the Cowboys, though we get three picks instead of one. Good luck to your 49ers and hope you get the players you were wishing for during the draft. :-)

I'm pretty happy with what we've done so far... I thought that Patrick Willis was the absolute perfect pick at #11... he was the best linebacker in the draft and he adds playmaking ability and speed in the middle of our new 3-4. Then we trade up with the Pats and get Jon Staley, a big O-Lineman who has been rising on most boards... hopefully, either USC receiver or Sindey Rice from South Carolina drops to #42... when is the Eagles first pick?

The Eagles traded their first round pick to Dallas, of all teams and moved down in the second round. Many Eagles fans, including myself, are not happy by trading with our rival and allowing them to move up. We ended up picking Kevin Kolb, a quarterback from Houston, which was another shocking event for us. LOL This must mean that they have doubts about Donovan McNabb and his health. They also picked Tony Hunt, a running back from Penn State, Victor Abiamiri - defensive end from Notre Dame, Stewart Bradley - linebacker from Nebraska. I think the Eagles are picking people as backups and are not addressing any specific needs.

I think 15 minutes is a little too much... I mean, the first round took over 6 hours. Is that necessary? I'd like to see it cut down to around 12 minutes or so.

I think ten minutes would be sufficient for teams to adjust their plan if needed on who to draft. They should have a list of names that they had interest in so if one person got taken they still had other names as possibilities. It should not take 6 hours to get through the first round.

I agree..I think they already know who they want to draft before they come to the table ..maybe they think they are doing something good for their fans by taking the extra long time to finish up the drafts!:)+

They could be enjoying keeping their fans in suspense but it is probably due to changing their selection based on what other teams are doing ahead of them. I think 5-10 minutes is enough time to find a player they like and agree on.

You are right. It shouldn't take that long at all and especially if they already know how those players can perform and stuff.

Probably in most cases, for first round picks, that's true but remember sometimes the player you have chosen gets taken and the assumed players that will be left aren't the ones left. It's rare but it could happen. The decision has to be made by a group of people, some not even there sometimes, and discussed as to who wants whom and why. Wihle it's probably more rare in the first round, they probably figure it's best to give all rounds the same attention so there's no qualms.

It is true that many players a team wants will be taken by the time they are to draft, which happened to my Eagles. All teams have backup plans going into the draft but even their backup plans go south. It would be interesting to see what goes on in the boardrooms for these teams. :-) Maybe my Eagles needed more time since many people are upset with who they picked first.

I think it's ridiculous. that's why I don't watch the drafts on tv. I 'm not gonna spend my time just waiting and waiting and waiting. It's so darned boring. That's why I always wait til the sports comes on the news to find out.

It can be very boring to watch unless your team has the very first pick of the draft or maybe in the top ten. Any picks later takes forever to get to and then you do not know what your team will do with that draft, like our Eagles did. What do you think about the Eagles trading their first round pick to Dallas? I did not like it at all and then they picked an unknown quarterback.
