Victor Frankl, who wrote, "Man's Search for Meaning," was a an inmate in a Nazi concentration camp during WWII. In his book he tells of how his captors would give him a bowl of filthy water with a fish head in it as a meal.
He trained himself, however, to see the beauty in this meal rather than the horror of it. Frankl attributed his ability to see beauty anywhere as the reason he was able to survive the atrocities of the death camps.
He notes that if we focus on what's ugly, we attract more ugliness into our thoughts, emotions and eventually into our lives. By embracing an attitude of appreciation, we can transcend the most awful circumstances.
How about you? What do you think of this philosophy? Do you use it? Has it worked miracles for you? What are your thoughts?

I read that. That was the first of many war time diaries I read, and I found it so profound, that I became fascinated by the genre. Man's capacity for suffering, and carrying on anyway astonished me. I wouldn't have risen to the occasion the way he did. I think I wuold have been one of the people who fell behind on the barefoot snow walks and was shot. It is an incredibel book though and I highly recommend it.
Have you ever read Victor Klemperer's 'I Will Bear Witness', 'A WOman in Berlin', or 'The NAzi Officer's Wife'? They are also brilliant.

Don't you just love Victor Frankl's quote (I paraphrase): "There are only two races in the world, the decent and the indecent." I love that!
Thanks for the recommendations for further reading. I appreciate it.

It is certainly like, if you will draw positive traits most likely you will attract positive things. I am an optimistic person and that helps me a lot. We've got a very wonderful yet cruel world. The only remedy that we have to survive without any cost is to stay positive always.
