My heart is breaking

Last night I accidently locked my new kitty Abigail in the garage. I also left the side door opened and guess what she is gone. My heart is hurting. I have walked the neighborhood shaking her food dish several times calling her name. I feel so bad because it was my carelessness she got out. I raised two children safely how can I be so irrisponsible? I have had her only one month now she is gone. I do hope she comes home. Everyone I have talked to says she will when she gets hungry enough. I sure hope so.

I hope so too. Don't give up hope. Our precious cat disappeared for 9 weeks once. We had lost hope. Then we heard this meow at the door and fell over each other getting there. I don't know who was happiest to see whom! We never knew where she was all that time!

That's great! We had cats, and every once in a while the older cat would wander off - he disappeared once for an entire week. We were beside ourselves. He wandered back in one day as if he had never been gone. Cats are funny this way.

Try to remain positive. We had one of our cats go missing for 2 weeks before she came back as though nothing had happened. We did the same thing as you, went out every night and rattled her food dish. We were on the verge of giving up when she came back. Try not to blame yourself, accidents happen. Hope things turn out well....good luck

I am hoping that is true. I let my cat out and he has not returned yet that was 2 days ago. I call him everytime I take my dog out for his walk but to no avail. This was a cat that I took away from someone who was abusing it.

My cat has not come home yet. But I know where he is. Back with the one that was abusing him. She doesn't know that I know he is there. I am keeping a close I on her since we live in a trailer park. So far everything is fine.

OH no my heart is breaking for you. Abigail came home I hope yours does too. In the past when our cats got out they would never come home so I was afraid this would happen to Abigail. My good thoughts are with you. I know what you are going through.

sorry to hear that :( a tabby i used to have would take off when he could, and i would do the same-i'd be heartbroken til he came home. he did always come home when hungry though. also ask your neighbors to check their garages and sheds-that's where we found him once-up the street at a neighbor's.

My neighbors said not to worry she would come home and she did. I guess I should not have beaten myself up. I just felt that if something happened to her it would have been my falt.

My heart breaks for you! I hope by the time you read this, Abigail has come home. I experienced this several times with two of my cats. My oldest cat (now 13) disappeared once for six months when we lived in the city. I thought the worst. There were vicious dogs in the neighborhood and vicious city cats. My cat showed up at my back door, meowing as if nothing had happened. When we moved, He disappeared for over a month. We had a snow storm, and he went for shelter underneath our neighbor's porch. When the snow thawed, he appeared again, skinny and weak. He had frostbite on one ear. Now he has only one ear. Within a week, he was back to his old self. Another cat recently went missing for over a month. But he returned on our porch. He was skinny and dirty, but now he is back to his 17 lbs. Both cats no longer wander. I'm sure Abigail misses you and will return. Please let me know how it goes.

Abigail is indeed back home sleeping on the end of our bed. In the past we lived in the country everytime a cat disappeared we never seen them again. SO I did not have much hope. This is the first time I have lost a cat in the city. My husband had a stroke almost 3 years ago. He is a changed man. He use to hate the pets. Now he likes the pets. He use to tolerate the dogs but really hated the cats. Now he will let the cats sleep on his feet and even sit on his lap. So when Abigail came home he asked her where she was. He even spoke to her. WOW what a changed man.

Maybe you can leave a little trail of cat food to the garage and leave the door open? I don't know though how you would keep her from leaving the garage again. I am so sorry though about your kitty..I do hope and pray you find abigal;)+

We had a similar incident happen with our Big Cat Andre. We had put him out in the Florida room (addition to the house like a sunroom) and my daughter had left a window up to far and Andre pushed the screen out and was gone for about a week. He did come home though. I hope Abigail finds her way back to you.

I'm glad she came home! That is good news, and how did you know she was home did she meow and claw at the door or did you leave one of the doors open or just keep watching out the window?

I keep reading your posts to other people and I'm glad she's back. It's a good thing that you guys were outside or she might have disappeared again. The flea thing isn't so bad since they have med.s for it I'd even be glad that that's all that's wrong with her!

Thanks so much for all your kind words. I appreciate it. She is fine and sleeping. I told Abigail I think Daddy missed you and he said "yes I missed her biting my feet last night". So all is right with the family tonight. Thanks again.

Don't give up hope...Years and years ago, my dad let my cat Butterscotch out, and she was gone for months. I cried every day, when I asked my dad if he'd seen her, and he'd tell me no. Then one morning, as I was getting ready for work, one of my neighbors called me, saying that she was down there. Thankfully, I'd gotten her a pet tag soon after I moved back to Virginia. I went to pick her up, and that was that. Anything is possible, so don't give up hope. Also, don't be so hard on yourself, everyone makes mistakes.

I feel really sorry for you! I don't like cats for that reason: once they disappear, all you can do is wait. My dog got out once, but it was a dog, so I could find him. He was following a group of dogs, he was probably never coming home. But I got him, anyways. Now, about cats it's more complicated. They do not walk in groups, making them harder to locate. Try walking once more in the neighbourhood and try to find your cat! I am wishing the best for you.

Congratulations! I think that's the way of cats. They are always leaving their homes and returning whenever they want. That's what I don't like in cats, but you can't hold your cat at home. It will escape wanting you or not. But don't worry, they always come back.

Don't give up. She'll come home soon. I actually left our blind cat outside during a thunderstorm one night. He's bad to hide behind the couch, so when we didn't see him before bed, we all assumed the other had brought him in. He's been blind since birth so has learned his way around our backyard. The next morning, he came running out from under my car as I walked out the door. I couldn't believe I'd left him out. Lesson learned, cats are good at taking care of themselves. She'll be fine and be home before you know it.

my cat gus - gus in the sink, one of his favorite places to sleep
I recently had the same sort of experience. We went on a day trip to Philadelphia and when we returned somehow the side door to our house was open and the cat was gone. I did the same thing though walked the neighborhood shaking the treat bottle looking for him. Fortunately our neighbor found him and took him in. We got him from the spca and he is chipped and has all of his tags so if he would have been found by someone else and taken there they would have been able to contact us.

thats one of the things my husband asked me "did you chip her?" I have all the dogs but I have never chipped the cats. I do not know if I will now or not. I have to think about it. Abigail is back biting our toes at night when we move or if she wants to. She sleeps on my chest at night an the other cat sleeps on my head so I am very warm.

Oh no! That is so sad. I am so sorry that this has happened. I know it is an awful feeling when a pet gets lost. But don't blame yourself too much, you didnt do it on purpose. Accidents happen. She'll come back, cats have good since of direction.

hope she'll be back. i'll be madly crazy if that happened to me that my kitty did not comes back. it happened one time with my cat, he got out unnoticed. my wife wondered where he is, she started to call him by meowing too. then she heard a reply outside our door. once she opened the door, he looked at her meow a loud one and runs inside our room. it likes telling her "why locked me out?" then came inside.

My husband use to hate the animals and now after his stroke he likes them. He won't admitt it, he was worried. Our other cat was so upset she hid all day. She lost her brother two years ago and I guess she was afraid she was going to have to go through it again. She is 10 and we just got Abigail a little over a month ago. The cats now are just liking each other. Thanks for your kind words
