My kids were at a birthday party today and we got talking about birthday presents. My 40th is coming up this year and I put the kids on notice that this is a big one and handmade cards and socks will not cut the mustard this year (joking, before anyone gets offended). It made me think back to the crap that I used to but for my Dad on his birthday, Xmas, Fathers Day and the one present that sprung to mind was the combination tie and handkerchief set....this was the most common of my gifts to him and thoroughly horrible now that I think of it as he rarely if ever wore a suit and tie and I can't ever remember him blowing his nose into anything other than the cuff of his shirt or a dirty tea towel that was laying around....do you guys remember those crappy gifts and what is the owrst thing you ever got your parents?

my poor dad had a door full of ugly ties..and i mean UGLY.but mom bought them, not us LOL
i usually got my dad those chocolate covered cherries for holidays,it's what he wanted.
the worst gift (accidental) was probably a dress i bought mom..
4 sizes too large.she was mad.
but i was 7,i had no idea what size she really wore.
i thought it was pretty,anyway;)

Congratulations on soon hitting the big 4-0! I turned 40 last year, and I'm still waiting for my surprise party. (haha)I hope you have a big bash!
Looking back, I have to say that I put a lot of thought--agonizing thought--into what I bought my dad. I remember one year I decided I had to replace the ratty bathrobe that had to have been older than me. I saved my lunch money for weeks and dug for change in the sofa cushions and was able to give my dad a nice thick robe. Now that one needs to be replaced. One year I bought him a keychain that I had engraved with something sentimental about dads. He looked at it, thanked me, and told me it was too nice to use for every day. Recently I found it in his jewelry box on his dresser. And looking back, he always put a lot of thought in what he gave me. We didn't always get much, but whatever it was, it was always something special. Thanks for the memory...
