The great spring cat round up!

Well, its that time again - flea season. So, I went to the vet & got enough frontline to treat the cats + 3 dog treatments. And then, after printing out a list of our cats, we started the round up. We got all but 5 of the cats before the new roomie got home from work - this included one of the ferals! But the other 5 included her 2 cats, our other 2 ferals inside & the outside cat. Her cats were FINE, good girls, better than some of our other cats, but those last 2 ferals!!! Gizmo - the one I thought was outside earlier this week was a big - TRAMATIC catch, I finally pulled him out from behind one of the little fridges & got him - admidst much howling on his part. Star, on the other hand, came down to try & sneak outside while we were treating Giz & I grabbed her as she tried to get past & very sweetly got her treatment. Last year we only had to treat the animals twice, so hopefully that'll be the case this year too - need to treat the yard & cat porch still, but all the stores are closed so I'll get that stuff tomorrow.

Wow that sounds like a huge task. How many cats do you have? I love cats but I've never heard of anyone needing to print out a list of all their cats. Not saying it's a bad thing that's a great idea so you know who you've gotten and who you havent so you don't treat the same one twice hehe.

27 cats - we got the 26 inside cats. Now, 2 were treated earlier in the day for the cat adoption so we were only catching 24 of them.

Wow that's alot of kitty cats. I love kitties but I don't know if I could take having that many unless I had a large house.

last year was horrible for me, I have 4 cats and the house was infested with fleas. My son and I were bidden like crazy. But now the fleas are all gone and everything is okay again, I hope I don't have a repeat performance of last year.

I still have some stuff leave over from last year. I had to get it from the states, It was way to expensive for me here in canada since I have 4 cats.

I know things are tight for you, but if you start having problems again see if you can't get 4 doses of one of the flea meds (most vets will open a pack to give you a 4th.) We got thru last summer with dosing them in June (after having a serious outbreak) and again in Aug. This year I hope to avoid the serious outbreak!

Your household sounds like mine. When it's time to treat our 12 babies, it's definitely a workout. LittleBit, my calico, knows exactly what the little green Frontline one spot container looks like. So I have to sneak up on her when she's not looking and squirt it on her neck really fast before she runs. The rest of the inside cats are pretty easy to do, but they won't speak to me for hours afterward. Three of my outside kitties are next to impossible to catch. Two of them are feral and won't get close enough to grab, so I have to trap them and pray I have a hand left when I get done treating them (sometimes our vet gets that unenviable job LOL). The other two, Muffin and FraidyCat, will squirm and protest quite loudly the whole time, but they are easy to catch and treat.

Except for the easy to catch part, our 3 inside ferals, once caught, are treatable, but Giz sounded like he was being torn limb from limb! The 2 girls were silent, but not real easy to catch.

It sounds like you had fun trying to do all the cats, I have that problem with just two! They know as soon as you come back from the vets with the frontline and always disappear.

Hahaha. Thats funny. Especially the last part about Star. I really thought that Gizmo was funny about the howling part.

It was funny - but sad too. I mean, it was sad to hear him howling, but we knew we weren't going to HURT him & we were laughing - amused by his antics even as we felt sorry for having to scare him.

You are going to have to go through all of that twice this year? Oh my! Were yuo completely scratched up? For sme reason we don't have much of a problem with fleas. I don't know why they don't bother our cats and dogs. I wish whatever prevents it could be bottled, because I would happily share it with anyone who has to go through all of that!

No, just one long scratch on my left arm & a few small ones on my hands, the roomie also got a long scratch on her right upper arm - she must've been trying to catch a cat trying to escape were that scratch is!

Thank goodness I only have Moomin to treat. She is difficult enough to manage as it is, and I know there willbe a fight when I have to give her the flea treatment. Last time it involved wrapping her tightly into a towel to keep her claws away from my hands :-)

lol I just had to laugh after reading your title to this discussion, Elic. Reminds me of when I was a kid and it was spring round up for the calf branding at the farm I used to visit every day. I just couldn't wait till I turned 13 cause then I became one of the 'official' calf ropers. That is quite alot to handle but it must be done if you don't want to become infested with fleas. Our animals are on year round preventive cause their interceptor also is their heartworm treatment. The 1st of every month is when I go on the prowl for all my animals for the 'meds attack'. They all know it too. lol I STILL have to get ahold of our new kitten, CosmicWhitePricess's wild cat, Tigger. He learned real quick and is now hiding behind the headboard where we can't get to him. Just gonna have to wait him out, as usual. lol He's also gonna be wrapped up in a towel cause I know he's gonna fight the ear cleaning he's needed for a while now. Think I might cut his nails as well. Good luck in the treatments and getting the yard sprayed. Fleas are not fun to get rid of once they 'explode'.

But don't you know that the only cats that injured me were the normally tamest & friendliest of the bunch!
