Can anyone recommend a good dog to have in an apartment. I will take it for a walk every day but it will be left alone in my apartment for up to 8 hours 4-5 days a week.

No puppy should be left alone for that long. Maybe you should get a cat.

Unfortunately I'm allergic to cats so that's not an option. Is it OK to leave dogs alone for 8 hours once they are grown. 8 hours is the maximum amount of time that it would be ever be left alone. There's a doggie rescue place near where I live that offers abandoned dogs for fostering or adoption so I could get one that is full grown.

How about a Havanese? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Havanese They're fun little dogs, are small so they don't require much room and one walk a day would be sufficient exercise. Their only downfall is that they do require a bit of grooming on your part, but a brush every few days in front of the TV should keep that in check.

I think a pug would be a good apartment pet. They are small & have short hair so grooming and bathing should be easy.
