Ripped off by a building contractor...

We recently built a new home using a national building company which provides the plans and basic materials to build your house. We built this house long distance, so we didn't have as much control as we should have had. Occasionally our general contractor would call us and ask things like, "I have a great whirlpool tub which I can give you for a good price. Do you want it?" We also did some upgrades such as Pella windows instead of the cheap ones that came with the package. Anyway, we have now learned that when we didn't take the materials we had paid for that were part of the package and bought something else instead, we were never credited for these items by the company rep. This amounted to several hundred dollars, and now we're having to hire a lawyer to fight to get back what is rightfully ours.

This has become a common concern over the previous few years. There are so many traders that make easy money by either overcharging or simply providing a shoddy service that it is worrying when trying to find someone to do work for you. It is no longer safe to pay high prices to use a large established business, as has been shown on the various TV programs that uncover such practises. I always have reservations where building work is concerned.

Unfortunately, our son in law is involved in this problem. He was our general contractor who had worked with this other firm before. He said they were great. However, since we've since learned that he's as crooked as they are, we realize we should never have trusted him, either. It's sad when you can't trust your daughter's husband.
