Hey I will give it a try :)) I adore tomato soup anyway. Is there no sugar then? If not its probably more like a bread than a cake. Thanks for the suggestion.

I hope you do decide to make this for your mom. If she likes spice cake, she will like this, especially if buttercream or cream cheese frosting is used.

It actually sounds interesting. I wonder what it would taste like if I used chocolate chips since I don't like nuts or raisins. I have a day off on Wednesday and might just make it. I just won't tell anyone that it has tomato soup in it until after they taste it. I will let you know how it goes.

that's great! I wouldn't tell them till afterward either. I know my brother and I gave my mom such a hard time cause it had tomato soup in it. We certainly changed our tunes. As for chocolate chips,I don't see why it wouldn't work. Good luck with it!

I love tomato soup cake. A friend made this and brought it into work for us to sample. It was divine. She topped it with cream cheese frosting. I made if often for my kids to snack on. My husband enjoys it as well. It is a very moist cake too. You never know that it has a can of tomato soup in it. The flavor is great, like a spice cake.

My favorite is to add chopped pecans or walnuts.

Chopped dates can be used in place of the raisins too.

I always like to try new things in the food line. I had never heard of tomato cake but since I like tomato soup I am willing to give it a try. I'll let you know what I think about it. Since I am not a big cake eater I won't be making it right away. I will see what the grandkids think about it. I won't tell them what kind of cake it is till they take a bite first. Thanks for the recipe. It sounds interesting.

Thanks for the best response. I don't get back right away to respond to responses to mine but I do get back. I made the cake the night before they came over. It was sitting on the table and when they asked what it was I told them to just go ahead and eat it if they were hungry. They took some and ate it and really liked it. I mentioned what was in it and they couldn't believe that cake could have that in it. Thanks for the great recipe. I tried it and it was delicious.

I have written the recipe down and will spring it on my grandkids who are coming over on Thursday. I figure I will probably make it Wednesday night and have it sitting on the kitchen table. I'll see what they think about it and I also will try it.

How cool. I heard that tomato soup cakes and cola cakes were really popular during the war. They couldn't get sugar so they used things like tomatos and cola since they were sweet and your cakes wouldn't need as much sugar in them. I haven't tried tomato soup cake, but I woudl be willing to. I have had old fashioned cola cake using coke, but you have to use a pure cane cola or it doesn't turn out quite right. Back then they used pure cane sugar in the colas. I will find the recipe for a cola cake and send it to you if you like. Here in Texas we use pure cane sugar Dr Pepper to make our cola cakes and they are yummy!!

I am not a very good cook so I need exact instructions. You never said when to add the tomato soup, I suppose it is added when you add the milk. Also what size baking dish do you use for this cake, I would hate to get it to thin and burn it, or to thick and have it gooey in the middle. I like to try cooking or baking things and surprising the wife, but sometimes I fail.

I just went back to my receipe and noticed that i left out when to put the tomato soup in.It's right after the dry ingredients are mixed. as for the baking pan,I always used a bundt pan as did my mom before me. if you wanted a regular pan,I would try 2 8 inch round or square pan. greased of course. it's really good especially if left for a couple of hours before eating or overnight. if you use cream cheese frosting, your wife should love it p.s. welcome to mylot
