What's your opinion on current drugs used for depression and schizophrenia ?

I mean I sometimes feel like the only effect of those medicines that is visible on patients is the sedative or (narcotic) effect . I sometimes doubt the exact mechanisms of the respective illnesses are addressed by these drugs , and their use is mainly directed at producing a generally quiet state in the patient , in a way that is so inaccurate that is reminiscent of electric shock therapy . Do you ever have the same feeling ? Why don't antipsychotics reverse schizophrenia and result in the person having a normal quality of life , like antidepressants sometimes do for depression patients ? Don't you think there obviously is more to the problem than a mere " chemical imbalance " , that causes one to be excessively sad , angry , paranoid , unreactive etc ??

I don't know but I thought that in the case of clinical depression some kind of serotonin enhancement was necessary although not alone sufficient. all the best urban
