The biggest robbery everyday does not always hit the news graft and corruption. According to IBON, in 1987 alone, the government lost almost P 100 million everyday because ofgraft and corruption. For that year, the government lost some P 36 billion to felons in the bureaucracy. This indicates that from 1986 to 1990, the government may have wasted about 15.6 percent of the national budget for this reason. IBON also noted that for every peso paid in taxes, 37 centavos went to the pockets of thieves in public offices. From 1987 to 1990, P 162.5 billion in tax revenues for that period was lost to corrupt officials. This amount is equal to the total individual collections from direct, indirect or international taxes for the same period! No wonder people are not very eager to pay taxes.
