This may seem like a weird question, but...

Is there a certain time of day or night that just freaks you out or puts you on edge? This might just be one of my own quirks, but I seem to get apprehensive between 3 and 4 a.m. If I'm awake my senses seem hyper-acute, if I'm asleep I tend to wake up. Does anyone else experience anything else like this, or am I just strange?

I've heard that it's something to do with cortisol levels being high at that time of night. Cortisol is associated with a response to stress, so it might explain why we have nightmares, or feel anxious if we're awake at that time of night. I used to always sleep through the night, but now that I have kids, an annoying cat, and a snoring husband, I often get woken up around 2 or 3 am. Whenever I do, I seem to lie there, obsessing about some imagined harm that might befall me or my family. I think crazy thoughts, like there's no way I'll ever let the kids ride their bikes again, or that I need to board up their windows to prevent them from falling out. The next morning I'm back to normal and suggesting that the kids ride their bikes to school. It's quite a bizarre phenomenon.

Thank you. I have to say I was intrigued by your screen name, and wound up reading and enjoying quite a number of your discussions last night. Unfortunately someone had always beaten me to whatever point I would have made. This was the only one where I had something original to add. Maybe I'll try to get there first next time :).

Your response is a very educated and informative one. It's also worthy of "best response" but alas I can only give that away once. Thanks so much for the info on the cortisol levels, that would explains things pretty well. I will have to look into it further. Minnie Mouse is HOT! filmbuff

yes, i feel the same way. But here in the east, i think most people are aware that between 3am to 4am it is the darkest time of the day and most of the "negative" things are out for "fun". This is also the time, as I've experienced, where most of my nightmares occur, even when i'm half-awake, twice happened that I felt so weird because I was awake but felt I was half-awake. I can't explain it but it is a natural occurence, i guess. Also, this is the time that most babies are always alert, my eldest always wakes up exactly 3am almost every night when she was 2 years old.

That is so weird, but strangely comforting to know I'm not the only one. It makes me wonder if maybe it goes back to the reptillian (as scientists are fond of calling it) parts of our brain. Meaning this is/was the time of night when nocturnal predators were likey to attack and make a meal of us. By extension, that could include the present nocturnal human predator. Something to ponder, what do you think?

no i don't experience any such thing on regular basis. however, on some days i just get an edge over other days. i would be just more sharp and have proper repartites and puns, i would manage stuff in a jiffy and perfectly. i would do things with a perfect touch. this is seldom though. by the way, what you apprehend during that hour? and does this happen on regular basis ??

I've had those days too, when you just feel a little off, I think we all get them. To answer your question, there is no reason that I can think of that would cause me to get pensive during the wee hours of the night it just happens. I've been attacked, or harmed or anything like that, there's nothing that I can pin-point as to why I feel this way. After 4 a.m rolls around, I start feeling more and more comfortable until 5 or 6 when I go to bed. It's strange, I almost feel like I'm on watch, and once the world wakes up, I've done my duty and its time to rest. Thanks so much for your response.

Nope your not strange, I am with you on this one.. Hence why I am up with you. I can not say I am a true insomniac, because I can sleep in the afternoon, and about 6:00am I will be wanting to go to sleep, just in time to have to be up and starting my day. I can also sleep well in the evening, but something about the magical twilight hours after midnight is when I want to roam, and piddle with my hobbies. I love the fact that the rest of my "world" is asleep, the house is mine, the night is mine. I am not sure it freaks me out, I accept it, my family on the other hand worries I am not sleeping enough.

I've always been a night person so I'm usually up at night anyways, and gravitate towards job that allow me to live the night live as it were. I totally agree with you about being able to get so much done when everyone is asleep and there is no phone ringing, but I still get freaked out for some inexplicable reason between 3 and 4 in morning. It's just odd.

You are not strange. I don't have a certain time of day but I get that kind of feeling just before something bad is about to happen.

I get strange feelings often too before something bad is about to happen, and you've really hit the nail on the head there. The only thing is, that I get these feelings often during a specific time of night and nothing bad does ever happen, thank goodness. That's what is so weird about it.

yep, just after my office when I drive back home, I am a little weird by then. So its around six in the eveneing that I start loosing my temper. Behave a little nuts, shout on every small thing, do lots of worrying and thats it. After around one hour, when all of my energy and strength to shout or frustration oozez out, i become normal. LOLZ

Thanks for responding deepti, I was beginning to think that I was crazy. Maybe since I stay up nights instead of days like most people do, my clock is a little off and my hour of nutiness and stress buildup/release just happens later than most everyone elses.
