Doctor wasn't too happy with me, and neither am I

I got all my test results today at the doctor and have many more things wrong than I first thought. Now I am not going to name all my ailments one by one, but my weight was a HUGE shock to me. I came home from the doctor and called my sister, and as I sit here typing this, I am still crying. Please, I really don't need any negativity, so if that's what your here for, please don't bother to respond. I need to lose weight, and quite a bit of it. That is my biggest concern and may help all the other things get better or even disappear completely. I do not eat but 1 meal a day, so I really don't know what "dieting" can do for me. I don't eat sweets, nothing overly salty. I just don't understand. How can some people eat all the junk & stuff they want and be fine? I don't eat any of it, and I am a mess!! Can someone, anyone explain or give me some tips?

I'm so sorry to hear that you're having these problems! I have heard that it's good to eat several smaller meals throughout the day because it will keep your metabolism going. I read a book called The 3 Hour Diet, or something like that, and it talked about how your body starts to go into starvation mode once you haven't eaten for over 3 hours, so then it will try to hold on to your fat. Maybe that would help you if you only eat one meal per day. Also, exercising should help a lot. If you can't do too much right now, you could always just try starting out small and then building up your amount of exercise once you're more in the habit. If you can build some muscle, that will help your body burn more calories too. I know what you mean about some of those people who eat and eat and are so skinny! lol I have a friend like that who eats SO much more junk than me and she's a stick! It drives me nuts! lol It seems like I just look at a candy bar and gain weight. hehe Anyway, I hope I could help a little. Good luck!! :)

thank you for your kind response and ideas. My sister recently went through a lot of weight loss and told me something along the same lines of eating more times a day to "kickstart" my metabolism.

So was I :) I have to confess that I find it hard to do, but when I was able to it did help. ALthough honestly for me the best diet would be not have to cook each day because I always eat more when I cook:)

well, how much over are you?? trust me you'ren ot alone in this...i'm sure i'm almost 100 over what i'm supposed to be...and i've always been on the big side...its in my family..i guess...but i know eating 1 meal a day will actually make you gain. if you're body is normal (meaning you don't have a thirod or some other problem causing the weight gain) then all you have to do is eat contatantly...meaning Smaller portions spread out through most of the days. its good you're not eating sweets, but if you only eat one meal, your body will think it's starving and store the fat, not burn it. probably 6 small meals a day...3 main, 3 snacks...snacks can be like a few carrot sticks...an apple...something like that. portions should only be the size of you're palm. doing this will cause your body to start burning more and also stablize you metabolism. also you should drink 8-10 glasses of water a day to cleanse your system. 30min of cardio a day and weight lifting 3 times a week will cause even more calories and fat to be burned. you also have to remember...weight doesn't drop quickly and you have to keep it up...its hard sometimes. i know all these things...but i don't always do it and thats probably the main problem. i went from an 18 to a 14/12 and after having 2 kids i went up to a 20....right now my goal is to at least get to a 16 then work my way down from there...it takes a lot of hard work...but i'm sure you can do it. if you're serious about losing weight. i also suggest a book my husband gave to me which helped him go from almost 300lbs down to 175 i think its called "Body for Life" i don't remember the author, but i'm sure if you search for the title you'll find it. its a step by step guide to losing weight by eating right and exersize.

Hey mishleen i seen this was made 2 months ago.How are things going since then.Any changes? I wish you well but you know that eating throughout the day helps.Maybe that one meal you were eating had lots of calories. If you eat small portions throughout the day you wont eat so heavily at dinner time.I would suggest eating healthy snacks during the day.I would not skip breakfast even if its a fruit shake or plain fruit if you dont like breakfast.Drink plenty of water and green tea helps and its also healthy for you.I drink green tea every single day.Exercise to burn your calories even if its walking for 30 minutes.I wish you well and i hope things has been better for you.

I have always been a light eater. I have started to eat small things @ 4am etc because I work midnight shoft, my system is all out of whack. Just trying to adjust..lol

I know you are going to hate this but it is truth... I too am a small eater but a big girl. The best thing you can do for yourself is start eating 3 small meals and 3 small snacks every day. This will help boost your metabolism. Also, you need to exercise if you don't already and if you already are.. try to step it up a little. Also, make sure you are eating plenty of fruits and veggies and drinking lots of water. In your blood work did they check your magnesium? You could have low magnesium and if that is the case no matter what you do you won't lose weight so make sure you get a good calcium/magnesium combo. I recently lost 20 pounds and would be very happy if I could lose another 40 or 50. Make sure you are getting plenty of rest and try to keep your stress level down.. all these things will keep the weight on. I wish you the best of luck!!!

about 10lbs so far. I am not too sure. The scale keeps going on the fritz. One minute you get on it says one thing, the next it says something else. I mean literally one minute apart. I'll know for sure when I go back to the doctor. Thanks for asking. How about you?

I'm sorry this is making you so unhappy. I tried for a long time to lose weight but I just gained and gained more, until I joined a gym, and even going 3 times a week it took 8 months to lose 17 lbs. And I realized that without being physically active my weight wouldn't have ever gone down. I still don't diet, I eat breakfast lunch and dinner and I still have healthy snacks, but I burn a lot of calories working out. It's a lot of fun and I met lots of nice people there who are in the same boat as I am. Oh and you should have small meals every 3 hours. one meal a day is not enough to stay healthy. Your body is probably thinking it's starving and it's hanging on to all the weight. You don't need to diet, just start eating healthier foods, salads, nuts, beans, whole grains and lots of water. I hope you feel better soon.

thanks for your advice. My doctor told me to start out walking before any strenuous exercise, which I have been doing daily. I have cut almost all soda out of my diet. (I am addicted to coca cola, so we are weaning me off, where I used to drink nothing but coke all day, now I have 1) I have started to eat more meals a day, small snack type meals. I still only eat dinner as a real meal, but I do have little snacks such as yogurt in the morning and a banana at work. Working midnight shift, I am trying to adjust my schedule, a few of the officers have had similar problems with their health. It's a bad shift on your body.

But that is what you are doing wrong ...I mean eating just one meal. You have to eat 3-4 meals at regular intervals but small meals and never ever think of skipping breakfast, breakfast is the single most important meal of the day which more people do not have. And make sure that your breakfast is a good 300 calorie meal and not one measly toast which most probably does nothing. Eat a lot of whole grains (these take a while to digest and keep you full for hours) eat a well balanced meal and do 20 mins of aerobic exercises. When we eat one meal or just 2 meals a day our bodies think they are in starvation and hence our body thinks it needs to conserve everything so what it does is convert everybit of what you are eating to fat and store it in your body, which is quite bad actually. So basically what you are doing is harming your body by not eating. Ofcourse you already seem to be avoiding snacking on silly things so you need not worry on that end... but start eating a well balanced healthy meal. Also metabolism plays a big role in regulating weight, and if you eat just one meal a day you are effectively killing your metabolic rate too! Also you need to keep experimenting with food; a food that is good for me could be not so great for your body type so you see there are so many things to consider that it is not done all by yourself alone. Don't be sad my dear but infact go back to the doc and make a plan on what kind of a meal will be most suitable in helping you to lose your weight more efficiently since he knows your health problems and complications well, so he is the best person to advise you on the diet plan. What I gave is just a general advice and unless you talk to your doc or talk to a ditecian this whole exercise will be of no use. So I suggest you go back to your doc and make a good plan. Another thing you will be just fine dear just stick the rules the doc gives you and you will be healthy all over again without all the complications. So stop crying and start living....also did you know being happy helps you lose weight and stresses ups your weight well even I did not know this till recently. So be happy and start concentrating on your health and well being! also goodluck with getting back to yourself again. Here are some sites you can read through: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/09/09/health/main829506.shtml www.toloseweight.org/ www.personalhealthzone/eatregular.html www.bodybuilding.com/fun/jenheath3.htm Hope these help you but most definitely consult a doctor before changing your habits specially when they involve your health 'cos your doctor knows best about you and your body type. Goodluck

thank you for your response and the links !! I appreciate all the advice, but here's a question I've been thinking about, I work midnight shift, so when exactly should my breakfast be? At 9am right before I go to sleep or in the evening when I wake up?

If you go to sleep after that 9AM meal then it has to be dinner but if ti is just a nap I would take that more of a breakfast....I feel you must seek a fitness expert/dietician/or your own doc to help you put back in track about spacing and eating proper meals. I just hope and pray that everything works out for you. Goodluck

I am sorry you are so upset after your doctor's visit. I think some people just have faster metabolisms than others. I don't weigh a lot but don't put on weight too easily either so I put it down to genetics and metabolism. I think as long as what you do eat is reasonably healthy, there shouldn't be too big a problem. Good luck and hugs to you.

maybe its becaue you need more food.. your metabolism might be really slow because of you only eating one meal... try to eat more.. fruits & veggies.. if you are in a hurry in the morning and dont feel like eating just have a banana or a apple or something.. you need to eat.. try walking for an hour a day..

I think eating only one meal a day is not enough. When you don't get enough food, you body will sort of shut down and actually begin to conserve fat...i.e. weight. This is the reason so many diets do not work for very long. You cannot starve your body hoping to loose permanent weight. You might try eating 4 or 5 smaller meals throughout the day. You have to engage in some sort of activity to increase your metabolic rate. Start out slow and increase your activity as your muscles adjust to the new actitivity. It can be anything you might be able to do. Set a goal of losing a certain amount within a period of time. When you start seeing results, this should motivate you to continue. Believe it or not, many people who lose weight and keep it off actually eat more than they did before. The difference is their bodies are now burning off more calories becasue their metabolic rates are higher. This is something you have to want to do. See yourself as you would like to be a year from now. Picture your new self in your mind and keep that picture in your thoughts as you progress. You don't want to tell yourself your want to loose weight. What you want to tell yourself is that you want to be healthy. Your mind will create an idea of what healthy is and what it means to you. This is looking at this challenge from a positive stance. You always want to DO something from a positive motive. As an example, you don't want to be against war, instead, you want to be in favor of peace. See the difference? You want to be in favor of living a heathier lifestyle. This includes eating habits, activity habits and thinking habits. Unless you have all 3 going in the same direction, you will not reach your goals and become frustrated. For you to make serious progress, you have to look at this as a life long change in lifestyle...and all to your benefit. A heathier you will live longer and help you feel better about yourself. If you are successful in this area, it will give you confindence to do other things you might want to persue. Stop seeing yourself as being a mess. See and think about yourself as being healthy and in control of your life. I know you can do this for yourself. Focus on the good parts of losing weight and the good things about yourself. Do not do this because you fear something...do it because you love yourself and you love your life. The next huge shock will come when you look in the mirror and see what a radiant knockout you have created. That is your goal. Feel good about yourself right now.

H misheleen73, How are you doing tonight? I read about your problems and what I do have to say is "do not despair". You will be alright. I am no expert but I know that you need to eat more to rev your metabolism. Perhaps you can walk a bit during the day or the evening or both. You have to get yourself eating properly and exercise lightly at first. As for your question "how can some people eat all the junk and stuff all they want and be fine"? Some people have very quick metabolisms and they burn as they eat. Most of us, including me, are not that lucky. Now, other concerns that you have are probably the results of being a few pounds over. Lots of illnesses occur because of being overweight. I have high blood pressure and my Doc says that I need to lose a few pounds and it will lower my pressure. A friend of mine has diabetes and it is mostly because of her weight. My Dad, God Bless him in Heaven, he was not a heavy person. He developed diabetes and then he took the pills, he lost a few pounds, very few, and the diabetes went away. When he passed away, he no longer had diabetes. Can you see where I am going? Just do things the right way in moderation and you should see yourself doing much better. I wish you all the best, good luck to you and God Bless You...Take care of yourself...Hope to hear from you and sorry to be so long winded, just wanted to inspire and help you...

Please don't get upset, tell yourself that you are going to make a fresh start and become more healthy. There are so many different ways to lose weight and it is not just a case of calories in and calories used. I believe it is where the calories come from that can make a difference. If you are someone who maybe diabetic or pre diabetic then you will put on weight very quickly when you eat carbs and a diet such as the Atkins diet would be perfect for you. I went on the atkins diet last year and lost loads very quickly, the only thing is it is low in fibre so you need to take something each day such as fibre gel which is just fibre in a sachet, otherwise you will have problems that you don't want. Also each day try to take a walk and increase each day until you do at least 10,000 steps a day. It sounds a lot but as long as you are able to walk you will be able to do this, make sure you have some decent trainers to support your feet. This amount of steps has been proved to be the minimum each day to help you get fit and control weight. I am not sure why you only eat one meal a day but this could be part of your problem. When the body thinks there is a food shortage it hangs on to every calorie you give it to help you survive, it is trying to help you but it is not enough just to tell yourself that food is in abundance. You will have to start to eat more times in the day and at each meal leave a little on your plate, that way your mind begins to cotton on to the fact that there is enough food around that it doesn't have to keep your body in starvation mode and will start to burn calories more efficiently for you. Make sure you drink plenty of water each day and take a multi vitamin and mineral supplement. You can and will do this, you will begin to feel great as soon as you begin this new way of living. Don't think of this as a diet but a change in lifestyle and each day you will get fitter and will lose weight and feel so much better and more alive.

OMGosh! You are so NOT alone w/ this! I'm right here beside you. I NEED to desparately lose alot of weight. It's so hard! Why is it that it is so easy to put and so dang hard to take off?! Buddy systems seem to really work. So, if you would like to, I'm here. I'm like you, though, I eat one meal a day. And, I know that this isn't the right way to do things. When I eat breakfast, its like it jumpstarts me for the whole day. I'm hungry shortly after and then I feel like I wanna eat all day. I told my kids today that their Mother's Day present from me was for me to lose weight so that I will be here for many more Mother's Days. But....I know I cannot do it alone. Good luck to you my friend!

I hope you can do it too. I have problems with the whole "eating" thing because of my work shift. My body is so off, I am never hungry, I have to force myself to eat a banana at around 4am so I can take the meds my doctor put me on for my health issues. Then I go home at 8am, sleep @ 10am, wake up, get the kids, cook dinner, eat, shower and etc then back to work. i really have to work out some kind of system. I am here too if you need anyone to talk to, I just don't know how much help I can be, I can't figure any of it out. If you go by what doctores day about food intake, etc I should be Twiggy already !! LOL

ok this is my tip .firstly this is not meant to be a put down in any way ok.butive always eaten big meals i over eat big time compared to others around me in fact one place i was working at banned me from the lunch room because the girls were getting upset they had a small salad for lunch i had a whole chicken a large cake and a 2 l bottle of coke so you can see why.how ever i have never been fat.i dont eat regular meals i only eat when im hungry my body tells me what i need and how much.if i have a slack day i eat very little if i have a busy day i get very hungry and eat heaps.now just recently i went camping i took enough food for at least 5 people i ate the lot but during the day i was going bush walking up and down big hills .i say forget diets for get what the doctor says just get out and do things you enjoy.walking swimming canoeing ect burns off so much fat and guess what its fun too. what i find with people is once they get fat there self esteeme drops down to a all time low.they avoid places like beaches parks ect cause there worried about what others think and how they feel but really how do you think skinny people stay that way by getting out there and staying in shape.so if you want to get there and your serious.go get a comfortable pair of shoes on walk out your front door and dont come back untill your exausted.and do it every day go on a 2 to 3 hour walk and as you get fitter go on longer ones.and most importantly dont woory about what others are thinking its a trap just do it off you go good luck

I appreciate your honesty here. It is difficult for me to just "get out there" as I work midnight shift and have 2 children. I try to do as much as I can, but time is very limited for me. I do need to sleep during the day, and at night the kids are home and have homework, baths, etc. I know I will think of something soon. And I like the bit about confidence, it is very very true.

dont be so discourgaed and there is many ways to help you with weight lose. do you have children? have you ever had your thyroids checked? alot of times women who have had children, there thyroids become in active and can course the metabolicim to slow down, thus makeing the body store the weight. the atkins diet was the one that worked for me and plenty of walking. i have an inactive thyroid and am on meds, its has helped with my weight lose too. have yours tested and im her for you my friend.

I agree with what the others have said in that eating only 1 meal is not good for you as you become used to it. If you only eat when you are really hungry you tend to overeat and then store the rest as fat. If you eat small amounts regularly you are only providing yourself with energy that you will be using up. A colleague of mine has arranged a weight watchers at work club which means that we don't have the hassle of having to go elsewhere for meetings and I have found that just by being more aware of what I eat and increasing my exercise slightly I have lost just under 5 kgs (I believe 1kg = 2.2 pounds) in 5 weeks. I use the points system so I am now seeing everything I eat or drink in terms of points. I also joined a gym with a circuit - it's small, it's for women only and you go there and do a half hour circuit (or however much you want to do) at any time. No one is paying much attention to what anyone else is doing so there aren't really any esteem issues.

Oh hun, I really feel for you. All I can suggest right now is that maybe you follow some of the tips already given here and maybe try to get a little gentle exercise too. It is often very hard to take exercise when you are overweight and suffering other conditions too. I have found that simply going up and down the stairs in the house can be a good form of exercise. Eat three small, well balanced meals a day and try to take things one day at a time.

I am sorry you are so upset and are having such a hard time of it. Maybe eating less isn't the answer, bu moving more? Have you ever seen those little stepper counters? I have one that I put on fromtime to time just to see how much I am moving in a day. Sometimes it is a surprise how little it can be, and it is a great motivator to do just a bit more.
