why all married ladies are called Mrs. why all ladies are called by the name of her husband. while they have their own name. and ladies are also proud to be called Mrs. of any man. is it a natural feelings. if it is true then why most of the women are try to be self sufficien. While nature has given her their own place then why she is thinking more than their place.

I think that it is more out of tradition now more than anything else that a woman takes on her husband's name. Since at one time a woman married a man and became her property, she automatically became "Mrs." with his name to show that she belonged to him. This has been done for a long time and has continued over time and most women just continue it since it is something that is traditionally done. I don't think it has anything to do with being self sufficient and a woman does have the choice of keeping her own last name or of using both her own and his together.

That makes sense, but to me it's where the tradition came from that matters. Because that is where the tradition came from, because women did that originally because they were a man's property, it will be a cold day in h3ll before I become Mrs. Hisname.

You mean when a person is married why does the woman take the mans name?? I think its just a tradition that started along time ago. I myself took my husband names (when i was married) because i hate my maiden name. I kept his name after we divorced. Its like I got a second chance at anew name. But I don't consider myself a Mrs. I use my first name most of the time.

Well, it always been that way. They call a woman after the man she married and not the name she was born with anymore.

This discussion really grabbed my attention, and I hope it gets a lot of responses, so I can keep rating it + and following the discussion. Mrs John Smith? I hate that!! It's bad enough of a lady named Mary Martin takes her husband's name Smith, and is Mrs. while a man's title and name both stay put, but to be Mrs. John Smith instead of Mrs. Mary Smith? That's a little extreme!!!! I was born Miss L. Allan. THAT changed over the years. I dropped Allan (Dad's name) in favour of my mother's birth name, and I changed the Miss to Ms. because I was not going to change from Miss to Mrs. Now it's Ms. L Christensen, and it will be, for the REST OF MY LIFE, even after I get married.

Thank you, Vladilyich. BTW people, if you want to know who Oksana Pavlovna Ivanova is, I recomend you go to Vlad's MyLot page at http://www.mylot.com/vladilyich and take a look at the three books he has written. Through them. you will meet Oksana, and Svetlana, and Ivan, and Mikhail, and many many other interesting people. Another interesting thing about names in my family. My sister had our maternal grandmother's name as a middle name and I had my paternal grandmother's name as a middle name. We were both born with our father's last name. My sister kept Allan when she got married, and I changed to Mom's birth name, which I plan to keep when I get married. It's neat now, that she and I both have an important name from both sides of the family, with our first names being mutual decisions by our parents, and having no background in our family.

You know my sister nicknamed her husband "Pooky" and now the guys at work call him that too!!! LOL
