Do you RESPOND to DISCUSSIONS from EMAIL as OPPOSED to BROWSING myLOT

United States

According to myLot policies each member should read the discussion in its entire content and read all the responses to the discussion BEFORE we respond. Do you do this? I find it impossible through the email since the link on the email is to respond to it not to go to the discussion to view everyone responses. Wouldn't it be nice if myLot would send us a link to the discussion instead of responding to it before we read the responses, has anyone else had this problem as of yet or is it just me?

That is a good point. When I started responding through my email instead of browsing for discussions, I noticed that right away, and that it cut down on how many responses I rate. I try to go back and read some after my response goes through, and rate some that way, but it is a problem.

I have most recently started to respond via email because I find myself looking at discussions my friends started and the ones I see are ones I have already responded to or some I have no interest in.

I have turned off all my email notifications as I was getting entirely too many daily. I just go to Discussions my Friends Started and check to see which ones I can respond to. I didn't like the fact that the email took you directly to where you responded and you couldn't read the discussion and other responses first (which Admin says you're supposed to do).

I only turn "notify on" on those friends that have posted some very interesting discussions. I will add or turn off as time goes by depending on the number of postings made. It can save time by not having to check each individual friend. When I am online it is easy because the alert is either on a new posting or one that someone had just posted to. The latter may be one that I have already answered so it will be deleted from inbox and I will move on. +

I go through my emasils daily first and foremost. This causes some problems once in awhile. I respond throuhg the emails then read the others responses. Sometimes I may say the same thing in different words. Then I check for discussions I resp[onded to before to possibly make an added comment. Iy would be great if there was a link to the WHOLE discussion instead of just the respond link. Anyhow till then I do it this way. Hahaha! Then I go through the interest categories for fun etc. This is my pattern here as of late. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I haven't had this particular issue as I only respond to discussions from the myLot web site, not from email-- I only use the email notifications when it's to let me know that someone responded to one of my own discussions, OR to a response I left somewhere. The way the notifications are designed, DOES seem to make it hard for us to do what the guidelines suggest we SHOULD do, as you say.

Hello, texasclassygal, of course i will read the whole discussion if i decide to reply it, if there are too many responses,i will try to scan through it after i reply to it,that mean the sequence is opposite according to the mylot guidelines. You are right, maybe mylot should give us the link tot the discussion rather thab to reply the discussion.

Before i used to but it seemed that it's taking my time so long cause you have to open the file and wait for the download. while here in mylot, its just a few seconds especially if the internet has max speed. and before, i got tired erasing the message. it only adds up staying infront of the pc doing unproductive stuff such as waiting for downloads.

If discussions were sent to me via email chances are I would simply just miss them or pass them right by. Its really quaite hard to catch my attention on important topics via the email.

Most, if not all of the time I actually prefer to respond via notifications, all my friends on Mylot I have under notify which is so much easier than having to trawl through looking for their new discussions etc, as soon as I have answered the discussion then I can delete the email. If I have extra time then I will browse the site for interesting discussions to respond too. But I agree that sometimes going in 'blind' you do not know what people have responded previously

I do respond to discussions through my email, I have had no problems doing this with my friends list and that is why you have a friends list and notifications turned on so that you can do your responses more easily. When you receive your discussions through email you do not know what the other responses are therefore you cannot cheat and copy and paste what others have said which is against the rules of mylot. As I know everyone has their own view points so how could we do this if we did it the way I am doing it.

Kathy great point on the inability of spamming someone else's posting. But it does go against the grain of the rule saying we should read all previous postings before responding/commenting. Dammed if you do, dammed if you don't.

I usually go through my email alerts to discussions as its easier to skim through them and see what they are about. But at work i will go through the main page LOL as i just did to find this one. while i am at work i usually go through the page and topics this way. So i do half and half both ways to answer discussions.

It depends on the subject of the discussion, if there is actually something to discuss then yes I will read it all. But if it simply is a question like this one, reading the entire discussion isn't truly needed. And I don't respond via email at all, didn't even know you could do so, hehe.

Most of my responses are for discussions begun by my friends, so the link on the email goes directly to the place where I must write my answer. That way, as you have already said, there is no chance to read previous responses. But I ask: ¿why should I read them? I think my responses are more authentical if I am not influenced by what other people answered. Of course, it's possible I say the same things that others said before. ¿And what about it? On most subjects you can only find no more than three or fours trends of thinking, so you can't be obsessed about not repeating some other people's ideas.

well i dont like having the discussions sent to my email so i tend to come on here and respond to the discussions on here. i also try and read every response to the discussions before i answer to any of them.

Sometimes I turn the notification on and sometimes off, I prefer to respond directly from mylot and also I read more and interesting posts that might be there.

I am guilty of not reading all the responses before I post. I prefer not to be influenced by the other responses. I do not respond to discussions from email though. I have that turned off because I don't go to my email that often, but I do come here each day. I like to come here, to see all the discussions that started even the ones from people that are not on my friends list. ANd if I did it from my email I wouldn't be able to.

I do both, and this is for other places too. Since almost all my message boards and things are set for Email Notification, I read my email to browse what the subject matter is, THAN I go to the boards to read more in-depth and respond.
