My Dog is a huge mutt he's part Rot,Aust.Shepard and Retreiver. he's about a year old now and All he does is Itch.. He doesn't have flea's but he just constantly itches and on his back towards his but you can see that his skin is blotchy and red.. he licks and itches its like crazy but not just there.. everywhere everytime i see him he's itching or licking and it drives me insane! I was wondering if anyone has any product or easy home remedys to cure dry itchy skin on dogs that isn't going to cost me a fortune.

You didn't say how often you bathe your dog, which could be pat of the problem. Too many baths dry out the skin, but having the dirt build up can also make a dog itchy (it does mine anyway). We bathe our dog once a month and use an oatmeal based dog shampoo. In the winter, when it is particularly dry, we also give him a teaspoon of vegitable or olive oil on his food once a day. This seems to help a lot with our dog, perhaps it will with yours as well. Good luck.

Our dog used to scratch her skin all the time, then I suggested to my husband that our dog is probably itching because she's dirty and he should bathe her once or twice a week. That is what he did and now she doesn't scratch anymore, also we gave her lots of water and changed her dog food and bought a different brand.

Fleas and other such insects are probably the largest cause of dogs having to itch. If not treated the itching can become so bad that it opens sores in the dogs skin. These can become infected if they are not treated promptly. Be sure to take your dog to the vet at the first sign of an itch. The food you feed your dog can also have an affect on his skin so don't just assume that a dog's itch is from fleas.

Give your dog food that is rich in Omega 6 and Omega 3. These nutrients help pomote heathy, moist, dandruff free skin and a rich lustrous coat. Research shows that the correct ratio of Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acid to be 5:1 to 10:1, they provide greater protection against disease, reduces inflammatory response to flea bite dermatitis and dry itch skin and promotes a shinier and healthier health coat. Hope this helps!

It sounds like a bad allergy to something, did he get stung by a bee or some kind of spider..It could be ant bites too? I would take him to the vet just to make sure they can give him allergy medication.

Basking on the sun will help heal your dogs skin. It won't cost you a penny.

i have dogs like this too. it was so hard to treat their skin but ill share you what i did to make their skin not dry anymore. dont feed them chicken and fish, and egg, if ever youre feeding him human food. these are oily and irritates their skin. if you feed him dog food, check with the vet, he might be allergic to the brand.

he needs more oil in his food! You could try putting the oil from tuna and saolmo into his bowl, if you buy the oil packed kinds, or just pour a little olive or vegetable oil into his dry food and mixing it up. you could also try the oatmeal shampoo bath, and follow it with a mild bath oil in the rinse water, something like an unscented baby oil

Try a shampoo with oatmeal in it. it may hekp. if that don't work, try asking the vets office for some kind of vitamin supplement that willhelp with dry skin, I have a little dog he is part chiuahuah, part jack russel terrer and part daushaund, he had a dry skin problem, and the vets office recommended the shampoo, it helped, and I also bought some of the vitiamin supplement to add to his food, he loves it and he is no longer suffering form dry skin and itching.

We had a dog with that problem once-a poodle. The vet told us to add 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil to his food two or three times a week. Dogs that don't get canned food often have this problem. We could see the improvement in about a week; and after about three weeks, he had the glossiest, richest looking coat. If the dry skin persists, I would have him checked out by a vet just to be on the safe side.

It could be a food allergy or even mange. The blotchiness and hairloss(?) leads me to think he might have picked up mange from somewhere. Go take him to the vet to have a skin scraping to rule that out. If its food allergies, you may have to switch him to something grain free or to a food with an alternative protein source. Unfortunately the oatmeal shampoo isn't going to work a miracle for you, especially not if the skin is this inflamed and you are losing hair. For the moment, put some hyrdocortisone on it to relieve the itching and then go to a vet to see if its not a more serious problem.

That's likely not dry skin, it's an allergic reaction. I've seen soooo many dogs like this in my rescue and unfortunately there's not just a whole lot you can do. A vet can give him a shot and steroid for you to use but it never lasts for very long and it's expensive. The best things I've ever found is 1. check the food you're using for corn products (corn, corn gluten, corn meal, any of it). Switch to a food with NO corn in it whatsoever! This really seems to ease the itchiness for most dogs! And 2. give him plain Benedryl with no additives. I've used this countless times on dogs and it really does help but I always encourage you to call your vet first just to be on the safe side!! On the lower back/rump area I'd suspect a flea allergy. A dog that's allergic to fleas doesn't have to have fleas on him to itch. All it takes is one flea bite and the poor dog is miserably itchy! So another thing I'd probably recommend for you is the best all round flea regimine you can afford. Frontline is expensive but each dose lasts for a full month and it really works well so in the end it's worth it! Then also spray your yard and treat your home, especially around baseboards and wherever your dog normally sleeps. I hope that helps the poor guy out!
