First time getting stitches, have you had them before?

So I was washing my dishes last night, cleaning a class the way I always do and all of a sudden pop, the glass busted. I pull my hand out of the water and blood everywhere. I am trying not to freak I grab paper towel and go out side to get my daughter so I can go to the hospital. My boyfriend is outta town so i had to go to my neighbour to see if I can get a ride, Thank god for her she said yes, she is so sweet and she even watched my daughter for me.Anways long story short, i was at the hospital for 6 hour last night, about 5 and a half of that just waiting. I ended up with two gashes in my hand, right on my knuckles so i had to get 4 stiches in each, 8 in total and boy let me tell you I am a whimp, man did it hurt when he stuck that needle in to freeze it. So it was my right hand, the one I do everything with, I can't bend it because i have to be careful not to pop the stiches. I can't get it wet yet, so the dishes are piling up.The doctor said that is the number one cause of people getting stitches on there hand, he said he see's at least one patient a shift for it, who knew.My sweet daughter had to tie my shoes for me this morning, she is so great and is constantly asking if I am ok. The worst part is by the time I am done typing this it will have taken me 20 minutes..lol..Too funny. So I'd love to hear your experiences with stitches or just your comments if you have never had them.

I had the same thing happen to me (doing dishes and pop glass breaks) but the cut was on the palm of my hand not on the knuckles. That happened when I was 16 I think. My last set of stitches were last June when I had my daughter via c-section.

It sucks. He came home for the week end and didn't even offer once to help me even though it takes me longer right now cause I can't get it wet till after I get them out tomorrow. Although he did make supper so that was really sweet so I am not going to complain about it anymore..lol..till next time he does something.lol

I've had stitches a few times (I've been injured many times lol) but the worst time was when I was holiday in Corfu I went on a boat trip afterwards and everyone was swimming in the sea but I couldn't get the stitches wet so I had to watch everyone else have fun. Fortunately I'd already been scuba diving before I had the accident. The most stitches I've had at one time was about 60 and now I have a very large scar to add to my collection of smaller scars.

Getting the stitches taken out doesn't hurt much but it does depend on the person removing them. I hope you get someone who removes them nice and gently!

I have had stitches twice. The first time, I was younger and cut myself on a glass bottle. I was playing with it at the sink and it fell. My mother had told me to stop several times and I didn't listen, so when it fell and broke I freaked out and went to jump down and I landed right on the bottle. She took me to the hospital where I got several stitches. They couldn't get it to numb so I told them to just stitch me up regardless and they did. It really didn't hurt that much. The second time I got stitches I was a bit older and swinging on some swings at a family reunion. It was a hot day and before I know it, my hands slipped and I did a tumble in the air and landed face first on the ground. I had to get about 6 stitches that day. The doctor ended up giving me way too many, so I had to go back to my regular doctor a few days later and he had to remove some, and that was the most painful part of the experience. My lip was swollen for days on end and it wouldn't go down because the first doctor had put way too many in which wouldn't allow it to drain. After my doctor cut two out, it started to heal so much better but I still have a lot of scar tissue from the first doctor. My lip is also bigger than it should be because of that incident. That was by far the worst incident with stitches I've ever had, thankfully I haven't had to get any since.

Well let me just pat your back for being so tough. Geez I thought I might cry when he put that needle in..lol.I didn't but it did hurt. I told him a was a baby when it came to pain and the doctor said just don't punch me..lol.I wonder how many people have done that, lol.

What a bummer, I've had a glass break in my hand before but thankfully I wasn't cut. I'm glad your neighbor was nice enough to drive you to the hospital and watch your daughter. The only stitches that I've had to have were ones from surgery and I didn't have to feel them going in and they dissolved on their own so I didn't have to have them pulled out either.

Yes thank god for my neighbour. I had them pulled out a few hours ago, it did hurt a bit, more in some spots than others. The doctor had put thgem on so tight that the nurse had to really pull on them so she could get under them to cut them. I think thats what hurt the most. Well I can say I don't plan on doing that again anytime soon..lol

When I was ten, I was riding a bike that didn't have a pedal only the metal bar and something happened and needless to say the metal bar went into my leg. Right on the front in the center clear to the bone. It was probably the worst pain I have ever had next to childbirth. I had to have 64 stitches and 24 staples. The first and only time thank God. I hope your hand feels better. At least that sweet little girl of yours is taking care of you. Tying your shoes! That's so sweet.

I had the very same accident while I worked at a night club during my university years, while washing glasses. Blood spurted out from my hand in projectile fashion. It was quite scary, but so shocked was I that I actually laughed hysterically. To cut a long story short I had minor surgery to remove some shattered glass from my hand. Stitches naturally followed. I couldn't wet mine either. The wound began to reek after a couple of days. Be warned.

Oh wow, that sounds bad. I was just saying in anothert comment that I had to go to the doc today , i guess one cut is not healing so well so I have to put polysporn on it and take 4 pills a day of antibotics and she said if it starts to pain really bad(I guess at this point pain is a sign of infection) or puss that I have to go to the hospital and will have to be put on iv cause it's the only way they can get the infection out. So I am trying to be really careful now, although I did do the dishes tonight, took like 3 hours, i did bits at a time and I bought a brush and held that in my wounded hand as good as I could and held the dish with the other so I didn't get them wet but i am a bit sore now...Boy just tell me to shut up, I talk way too much lol

I've actually never have had stitches. I've had staples though. I didn't feel them when they went in as I was out at the time. But when I got them out I was proud of myself and didn't cry once. Of course that was ages ago when I was in first/second grade.

I've had stitches a few times in my life. Once I was jumpimg on the bed and jumped from the top bed to the bottom and hit my chin on an open dresser drawer. I needed quite a few that time. I also sliced a finger open while trying to open a can of spam. I had stitches when I had my daughter C-section too. Hopefully some magic fariy will arrive and do those dishes for you. Take care.

yes I can only wish that would happen. You have hurt yourself a lot. I guess I did have stiches once before, I forgot, when I gave birth to my daughter, it was a natural birth but I had to get stitches then too.

I've had to have stitches twice. The first time was when I was 11. I was in a horrible car accident. And my knee was pretty much mangled. I had to have 12 stitches. The second time, I was 18, and my neighbor had come over to visit. His dog followed him, and my dad's dog ran outside and started fighting with the other dog. Well, I made the mistake of getting in between them. Shadow turned on me, and sunk her teeth into both of my arms before the whole ordeal was over. I ended up getting 6 stitches, and being very, very late for my date. lol..

I almost had them when I had this accident in the gym, with the butterfly machine, my fault because I put lots of weight that the steel cord ripped off, I got hit on my right brow, I'm afraid to have a scar there so didn't go to the hospita. Luckily, no traces at all.

Well thats good. I asked the dotor if the scars would stick out and he well there will be a couple. I said oh well it's not like I am a hand model..lol..But it would be harder to deal with one on your face than your hand.
