Why does the Star Fall Faster than it will Rise?

3 to almost 4 months ago, my star fell from a 10 (99/100) to 8 (81/100) in just two days! It was not because I cheated or was doing poor quality responses. Someone got upset at me and targeted my star reputation to hurt me. Well...it worked. I work very hard here at myLot and give quality responses. If I do not have anything to say, I will not respond out of respect...so I do not go in a response saying, "I don't know." I post responses that are informative, open, positive, and often times...humorous. However, my star has sat at a low 9 (86/100) for two months. Why? I thought I was doing a good job. There have been many that have liked my responses. So, why doesn't my star rise? Could someone please explain? Mind you, I do rate all responses that I read and I do not pass out negatives unless you copy and paste or give a one word answer. All opinions are respected.

WOW sweetie! I hadn't even realized that you were still at a 9 rating. I am very shocked at that too. I don't know why it hasn't gone back up to a ten though. Maybe there are some people on here that like giving out negative ratings for something they disagree with or something. You're a 10 in my book!

Thanks sweet. :) You are a doll! I have made a point to avoid discussions that I would disagree with or are debates. To make sure that I do not disagree and in turn, my star suffer more. So, if anyone has not liked my opinion...they have not express so. And I wish the people that rate negatively would understand that opinions are not reason enough to rate a person with a "-". I respect everyone's opinion as their opinion. If we were all the same, it would not be very fun and we wouldn't have new and innovative ideas. :) You a 10 in my book to sweetie! :D

You know myLot states that the star rating is based on your reputation in myLot and I think you are a 10, and I am sure I am not alone in this realization.

Hello, brokentia, honestly,i could not explain it. I think many members have same experience like you, some of them rebound the next daywhile the other stay at the trough. May be it is the glitch of mylot which something goes wrong with your rating suddenly,I do not think it is your discussions or replies as they are all of good qualities,I cannot imagine someone mark you down because they do not like your discussions or replies. Anyway, i hope you will get back your blue star soon. Good luck

I have often wondered if people can actually 'revenge rate' on this site, because Mylot say they are not in control of how your star drops or rises, it's done automatically, but what's to stop someone rating every single response and discussion of yours NEGATIVE? That has always worried and concerned me. You do a lot of quality discussions and responses my friend and you are a well respected member of Mylot x

Yes, sadly, please revenge and jealousy rate. ha ha Not really funny...but I have also seen some star fall...I think...just because someone wanted to see them NOT have a 10 star anymore. Thank you dear friend. I enjoy your discussions and responses also. Therefore, you are also a well respected member and I am happy to say friend in myLot. :)

Honestly, I wish they would get rid of the darn stars. I know you give quality answers and you post good discussions. I really don't know why the star rises slower than it falls but I wanted to come in here to tell you that in my opinion, your one of the best people here. I can always count on you for a good reply and a good laugh every now and then. I don't understand it either.

Thank you so much! I love the fact that I can make readers laugh at times. :) I think that if they are not having a good day and I can provide a laugh for someone every once and awhile...it is a good thing. :) Thanks for the grand compliment! I think you are a very high quality person also...and your star shows the wonderful responder that you are. :) I wish the stars would go away too. :)

I have tried to figure it out also and can't. I think you are right in the fact that someone targeted you, for whatever reason, to bring your star rating down, but I know that I have alwasy enjoyed your discussions and since I have been here I have always had you on notify so that I can join in your discussions. I am unsure how many Best Responses you have to attain to make your star rating go up, or if that is what determines it, but I am convinced it is. But I am sure you have a bunch, cause I know I have given you a alot of them from my discussions, I find your responses always thorough and well thought out and very informative so I am just as baffled as you my friend.

I am very proud to say that I have seen many best responses from you dear friend. And thank you very much for the wonderful compliments. :) If star reputation were effected by best responses...I hope to see that it will reflect in my change to the wonderful 10 star. :) Oh...and it is easy to answer quality responses when I do actually really enjoy for your discussions. Thanks for so many great discussions that you create. You are a well deserved 10 star! :)

To be honest, NO IDEA. I find the situation to be the same too. I first hit 98, then it dropped to 97, then 96. Lol, it has stayed that way for as long as I remember, probably waiting for an opportunity to drop further. I do agree that you always give very quality responses. I suppose it is the algorithm of myLot. Just a guess - that it is better safe than sorry. When you give minus to someone, that someone is doing something wrong. So to err on the side of caution, the minus has greater effect than a plus. People usually sit up and take notice when a rating is too low. So a minus needs to be powerful. Remember that manish cheater guy whose star dropped from 7 (I think) to 1 (I think) overnight? I doubt that if we gave him pluses instead of minuses, he will climb from 1 to 7 overnight.

I can't see why you would drop in your star rep. Really! All your discussions are well thought out and written! Seriously, I think it also has to do with jealousy. People that do not put forth as much effort get a poor star. And instead of focusing on writing more quality responses...they rather focus on tearing down those with a 10. Sorry to read that you have suffered from this also dear friend. You will always be pluses when I rate you. :)

I don't believe the star rating is really necessary here. I have friends who have a 5-7 rating when they truly deserve a 10. They always leave quality responses to any discussion. They post quality discussions as well. They participate in the discussions they start. It only takes an irrate few to lower that star rating. It can also bring a person down when they see this happening. Lowering self-esteem is not what MyLot is about. The star rating needs to be eliminated.

I think we might have the same friends. :) Because I also have some friends that have low stars but also post high quality. :) But some would also admit that they tend to argue a lot and they do not care because they like debating. ha ha But I still rate those friends with pluses to try to bring them back up. And I could not agree with you more! Watching it drop does take a hit on one's self esteem. I have even written to myLot about this aspect. But of course, they did not respond. I wish they would do away with the rating system. I have actually posted less since watching my star fall...because it IS disheartening.

I've noticed that too with people's ratings. I wonder if it's because when Mylot introduced the star it was too easy for people's ratings to go up or down, so then Mylot changed the formula to make it harder for a small number of people to affect another's rating? And now that the formula has been changed, it's harder for a star rating to move up *or* down, but if your rating went down at the beginning, that means it's very difficult to get back up to your original rating.

Oh! Oh! I could not agree with you more! Once myLot introduced and started getting complaints that one's star was going up and down like a high tech bouncy ball or dropping faster than a brink in fresh water...they decided to change the way people were effected by one person. Sadly, if you got stuck in that low end when they put it into effect...you get stuck. Like me and a few other friends I have seen here. :( Thanks for your input. I am glad I am not the only one that thought this too.

ha ha You are right there about it being a bigger secret than Coca Cola formula!!!! LOL I think myLot keeps it secret so they can change it whenever they find that they need to. And I have wondered about the percentage effecting our pay. Why else have it based on a fraction of 100 but show the star as a 1 through 10? So, if we look at it as 86/100 verses 100/100...However, they round the 86/100 to a 8 star...I think there would a large difference to that pay range. Again...glad that I am not the only one that has pondered this. :)

Looking on the bright side, I wonder how much the earnings difference is between a 9 and a 10... do they just break it down between the whole star numbers, or between 1 to 100 (in other words, I wonder if there is much of an earnings difference between having a high 9 rating and a low 10 rating). We'll probably never know, since the Mylot algorithm seems to be a bigger secret than the formula for Coca-Cola!

you have to get a lot of plus responses to outweigh a visit from the negative raitings fairy. There was a time when a very small number of mylot users abused the system by awarding negative ratings to all that disagreed with them. Also, i feel some individuals took it upon themselves to follow users that they disagree with and hand out negative ratings to anything you type. Mylot seem to have this under control and watch the users who do this sort of thing. However, in a recent alert, mylot have said that no single user can effect your reputation star, but if a few act together, they certainly can. Blessed be

Isn't this true in "real" life also? If you get targeted by one person who is determined to marr your reputation it takes a lot to rebuild your character and show the person that you are. I remember how I felt when I fell from a high 9 to a low 8. I'm still trying to rebuild ... but I know that you're an outstanding myLotian. You really don't cheat, you have lengthy and intelligent answers, and you always speak from the heart, not giving an answer just for the sake of boosting the number of posts that you have. All of us who know who you really are believe that you're a 10 regardless of what the star next to your name means!

i don't know what it is that takes it so long to go up, but i actually think it has something to do with the fact that all the same people are rating you, no one new really is... Causing it to take longer, because as the MyLot staff told us, just a few people can't change your rating, so that could be it... You do give some of the best quality responses i've seen on here, i don't understand why you wouldn't be pretty darned hi by now again, but as far as I'm concerned, i don't look at that for you anyway, i just look at how great all the responses are.

Thanks sweetie! :) I have been trying to respond to other people outside of my friends group too...because as you said...it might be because the same people are rating me. But it is hard to keep up with all my email notifications and making new friends. So, I have to try to split my time more, I guess. Thanks for the thoughts and compliments. Makes it a lot easier. Yeah every time i think about that discussion i burst into giggles, i know i shouldn't haha, but it was kinda funny :P

it is indeed a sad thing that no matter how well we post our discussions with quality wecan get low star ratings even if the users disagree to what we say.i had my ratings reduce drastically from a 75 to a 64.i still dont know what i did wrong but there are some people who disagreed with what i said and decided to mark me down.i do not care a lot about the star ratings but at times it does make me feel bad with regard to the ratings because i do know i give fairly good responses.i never mark anyone down when i rate them.i just ignore bad responses but yet this happens.i guess we need to give responses which will be agreed by everyone ,even if we know that it is not right according to us,yet we do it for the sake of our ratings.

It looks as if you give quality responses here. :) But you are right, if we disagree with people, we will see our reputation fall. Therefore, I stay away from discussions that I could offend but I also encourage all opinions in my discussions. I respect that we are all different and will not all agree. That does not make a response negative in my eyes. :)

I share your concern, Brokentina!. I'll try to explain the reason that I have figured out about why it goes down quickly and rise slowly. So please bear with me:-) It has heppened to me twice. First when i got my star, it was 9 (86/100). In a week it went up to 90. Then fortunately or unfortunately I participated in a controvercial discussion and that too was just for an advice. All people in that discussion were name calling each other and were making personal attacks. I just asked them to be respectful and don't name call each other. Many people got angry on me and said they had right to name call. Then the obvious happened:-), very next day my star went down to 78 from 90. It again rose to 92 uptill last week when i started a discussion and may have hurt someone by just disagreeing. so it is now at 91 down from 92:-) This was just to give you a little back ground. Now the reason... I figured out that when some people collectively decide to go on negative rating rampage, you will end up having sharp fall in your star rating. For example if 5 people are disturbed and they decide to affect your star, they will go after as many of your discussions as possible and collectively will make huge amount of negative ratings. Say 5 people rate you negative on your 100 posts, you will get a total of 500 negatives, so sharp fall:-) Now whenever same people will see your comment somewhere they will rate you negative and even if you have gotten + from 10 people these 5 people will at least nullify 5 +es, so slow rise!:-) Unless some of your friends help you, your star will either rise slowly or remain as it, i will try to help you as much as i could:-) best of luck.

You make a very valid point. But because of this, I do avoid discussions that could turn into something that would hurt my reputation. I am not one that likes to argue, debate, or call names either. I would be like you and tell people that it is not necessary. But I have learned, that with some discussions, it is just best to stay clear of them. Heck, there are times that I have started discussions and it is not controversial but someone will make a comment that seems as if they are wanting to debate. Even then, I either leave it alone or I will just comment with something saying that I respect their opinion. Of course...I guess that could end me up with a negative though also, huh? Thank you for being a supportive. :)

Hello again brokentia! Hope you would be enjoying 87 now:-) You are right that to save star one should keep oneself away from controversial discussions, but to tell you the truth, a negative person will find a negative thing and will rate negative even in non controversial discussions. they are supposed to be like that and there is really nothing we could do about it. One option can be that Mylot limit rating to only those who have participated in the discussion. it will not end the problem but will at least reduce it. Similarly Mylot should limit a person's rating of other person to certain level. I myself don't care much about star. I am always respectful with people and never name call, but i can't resist when it's about values, principles, or if someone is disrespecting others etc. My star rating, despite taking part in many controversial discussions is a proof that there are much more good and tolerant people than the bad guys:-) Hope and wish even more rise in your rating. Btw 87 is not bad in 1 day and if your friends further help it can atleast go to low 10:-) Have a nice day

hi brokentia... i'm sorry to hear that there are some people out there that don't like your opinions and therefore had targeted on your star reputation to hurt you... i think they are really cowards and immature to do that as this is a free forum and everybody is allowed to express their opinion openly as long as it follows mylot guidelines... but i just want to tell you to relax and chill out... don't be so disheartened by the star as it is just a star... the main thing is to know that you had done the right thing and it is the most important thing... you are a 10 in my eyes and i hope your star rating will rise up again soon... just be patient and enjoy your time here... good luck...

I feel the same you do hon. Its so odd to have your star rating drop so quickly and then not rise at all when you are pretty sure you are getting quite a few pluses. I think, like you said, its just someone going around targeting people that have a good rating. Really I wish mylot would figure that out and ban them or something.

I have noticed that on some of your discussions say at the bottom that you rate all responses, and do not mark you negatively for your opinions unless you are cheating...well, the just of what you say! LOL So, to answer your question. I am not certain, but I am going to take a guess and not say, "I don't know." I think that a few, to four months ago they had a system on the stars that made it easier to raise and lower your star rating. And, they stopped this system as your star lowered making it harder for your star to raise back up to the top! :) I'm sorry! Let's try another scenario.... When people read responses, do most of the people focus on the negative of the positive rating? Well, when people are trying to catch cheaters, they are going to be focused on marking negatively. So, if you do not agree with that person, or offend them somehow they are going to mark you negatively, and others might not actually rate you. So, what I am saying is that your are not getting rated positively the way that you should, you are just getting the negative that you do not want. If that makes any sense at all! Sorry, just trying to think of something that might help you to believe in yourself and to keep trying! I have to tell you that I love your discussions and your responses. You really are open, positive, informative, and very humorous!! And, I do rate your responses and discussions with a positive every time...just to let you know! :D ++ I wonder how long this is?? LOL :)

That is aggravating...mylot needs to come out with some anti-targeting software. It is aggravating to know that people seem to do that kind of thing and then they get away with it, probably without suffering any ill consequences for their actions. I wish I could help, or give a satisfying answer, but unfortunately I can not. So sorry, but please don't get upset. People who do this kind of thing are not worth it.

Hi brokentia. I am so sorry to hear that this has happened to you. I always look forward to your discussions and responses. I have marked all of the responses you have ever given me positively as I rate the way you do. Pretty much the only way a person will get a negative is to copy and paste or give a one word answer, or not even an answer at all. Sometimes I just get a bunch of letters like a baby was banging on the keyboard lol.

Thanks for the pluses and always thinking I am a 10. :) I can understand myLot needing a system to tell how well we are doing. But at the same time, what stops those from abusing those that do not deserve that negative remark? I guess every system will have a flaw. And we should be used to the glitches within myLot. But it can really effect those that also try hard when they post quality responses. I have another friend that is just as sweet as can be and I have never seen her argue with anyone. But yet, she just suffered her star falling also. It just seems wrong and I wish there were something myLot could do because it is very discouraging.
