Were those gun shots?

I had a terrifying experience last night. It was a little past midnight and I was laying in bed watching some tv. Peacefully starting to dose off. At about 12:20 I heard two loud bangs echo through the air. Loud enough I think my windows even rattled a little. Were those gun shots?? My first reaction was to roll off the bed and hit the floor. I laid there for a few seconds, when all was quiet I got up. I looked out the back window. Looked out the front window. But I saw nothing. I finally called 911 to report what I heard. They told me the shots had already been reported and the police were on the way. Finally I saw police cars circling the neighborhood. I crawled back into bed and just laid there listening. I couldn't fall asleep because I was so tense. It was an eerie silence. I never heard any sirens or any voices. Just an eerie dead silence. I honestly believe that some one out there was laying dead or dying and there was nothing more I could do about it. Has something like this every happened to you? Have you ever heard gun shots or some noise that made you want to hide in the closet? Did you hide?
