Sand on your feet is not the end of the world... or is it?

Yesterday I spent a large portion of the day packing up my kids winter clothes and filling up their dressers with spring/summer clothes. I had piles of laundry that needed to be washed and clothes that were given to us to box up and label according to size... It was a long day for me and my kiddos!
In order to take a break I decided to go for a walk with the kids. Keep in mind that I have a 1,2 and 3-1/2 year old.
I put the one year old in the stroller and took off on the beautiful 70 degree day to unwind. We laughed and talked and enjoyed each other's company. The girls were very good and walked along side their brother and held on to his stroller when we crossed the street.
We came to a busy four way stop in the middle of downtown. Because it usually takes so long for us to cross I tend to let the cars go before we all take the long journey to the other side of the road. Besides that we have almost been run down by the elderly on more then one occasion. LOL.
Well yesterday we waited for quite awhile before I decided that we would go ahead and cross. Before I knew it my oldest daughter started screaming bloody murder and threw her flip flop down. We're in the middle of the street and cars are waiting for us to cross. I tell her to pick up her shoe and she starts crying. Her little sister sees what is happening and she throws both of her flip flops off and starts crying for no apparent reason! I kid you not, their brother starts crying from inside the stroller!!
So here I am 1/3 of the way in the street, 3 kids crying, 3 shoes on the ground and lots of people on their afternoon walk stop to stare, but not to help!!
I'm not sure how things happened from their own, but I picked up the shoes, demanded that the girls grab back onto the stroller and drug the stroller back the way we came.
What started this?? My daughter had sand on her foot. She can't stand to be dirty or have anything on her feet. It drives me insane!
So what's your most embarassing moment when your children threw fits? What would you have done in my situation? Have you seen other children throw royal fits that made your skin crawl?

Awww...I'm sorry sweetie!!! Kids can be very interesting at times.:)
First let me say, that I am not one to be bothered by another person's child throwing a fit in public. I know that there must be something going on that just happens to not be the right timing for it to happen. I have seven children....been there...done that...have a closet full of tee shirts. ha ha
So, I like to think that I am understanding of these situations.
Had I been there, I would have offered to help!:)
I can say that one time in particular...I was very embarrassed.
My son had just had surgery a couple days prior and all my kids were at school except him. He was pre-school age. But since he had his tonsils and adenoids out, he could not go to school for the first couple of weeks due to risk of infection...he also had his ears drained.
Well, I thought after a couple of days at home, he would be ok to make a quick run out to the store to grab just some milk. So, to make it much quicker, we actually ran to Target because their milk coolers were in front and I gave him medication to be sure he was not in pain a little before we left.
Note: This was not an option because my partner was out of town and not coming back because he was in process of getting another house for us to move and follow him 3000 miles away. I had to get milk.
Well, little Noah wanted candy. Thanks Target for putting that at the check out again. And he couldn't have candy because of his throat. Still needed to be on soft food or it could rip something and cause major damage. So, I had to say no.
Well, he was a completely different little boy on his medicine.
He kicked, screamed, dug his nails into my arm and just was not pretty. EVERYONE had to stop and stare because I had to hold him so tightly to ensure his safety while I signed the credit card receipt.
I tried my best to get him into the car and he fought and took some more skin out of my arm. I finally got him in and as I got in, he picked up my purse and drink and threw it all over me and my car.
Not once did I raise my voice or get mad at him. I knew it was the medication.
And people that watched...I knew had no clue.
So, I drove to the end of the parking lot and just sat there and waited it out.
It took a good 20 minutes for him to wear himself out. I was so scared he was going to hurt his throat screaming and at this point...I was even crying!
But when he was done....he cried because he hurt me!!!!!Never again did I take him into public on that medication!!!
And never again, has he ever behaved like that.
So see, I would never assume to know what was happening with another.
Instead, knowing myself that I had no help, I would much rather offer to help by taking the bags to the car of picking up a flip flop! Because there could be something that no one knows that is going on.
Little Noah is a very very sweet boy!!!! And he would never want to hurt me. But it was just a bad day for the poor little guy.

Yikes, poor Noah! I know that when I'm out in public and see another child throwing a whopper of a fit that I usually feel really sorry for the mom! I know it's embarassing and I also know that a lot of people assume that the child is just a naughty kid who's parent doesn't know how to discipline them, I admit I find myself doing this from time to time! It's always a different story when it's your own child though!
Thanks for the reminder that we don't understand what's going on and that we need to extend grace to people instead of judgment!

Wow! That is quite embarrassing!
Especially if everyone is just watching and not helping!
How rude!! :D
Well, if I would have known that she does not like her feet dirty...I would know for next time that she is going to be wearing tennis shoes, no matter the weather!!
I really don't know what I would do.
I might have just done the same thing as you did.
Just picked up the shoes and told them to hold the stroller!! Ugh, that would make me pretty made...but, she is just going to have to understand that sand on your feet does NOT kill you.
Thanks for sharing this lovely story with us!
You made me laugh!! :DD

Oh no that must have been so embarrassing and what a shame to end such a lovely day! I actually love the feel of sand on my feet and will always take my shoes and socks off when I get to the beach, feeling the sand between my toes, bliss! I don't have children of my own but I have seen children throwing fits especially in the nursery where I worked, one little boy threw such a fit because a girl was playing with the little Thomas The Tank Engine and it took ages to placate him!
