If it is 4th day of May in the year 2007 how will you write it? There are too many options the best being 4th May 2007. But if you shorten it, in my country, we write 04.05.2007. In American standards they write 05.04.2007 or 5.4.2007. What is logical? and why?

Seeing as I am American, the manner of month/day/year, makes more sense to me. First you know what month you are in, second the day and third the year. When denoting the date in short form today would be 5/2/2007 or sometimes just 5/2/07. If I was to write it out, I would write, May 2, 2007. At work we have a dily log and I start it every morning, we use the day, month, date, and year:
Wednesday, May 2, 2007 . It makes it easier for finding later. You may look by day of the week first or month, etc. When you have large groups of data to sort through, if you have the month first, you can narrow down your search to the month right away, therefore eliminating all the other months.

No Misheleen. The manner should be from small unit to bigger ones or vice-versa. Then only it will make some sense. I mean, first date, then month and then the year or first year then month and date in the last. When you write, or when I read while looking for a date in my PC, if it is 5/2/2007 I normally understand it as 5th day of February 2007. Because in my country we practiced it like that. I have to think twice to know that it is 2nd day of May 2007. Again I think it is better when you write Wednesday, 2nd May, 2007 instead of Wednesday, May 2, 2007 because it would be better if we could avoid writing figures closer, though there is comma in between.
Thank you, dear friend, for responding.

it's all a matter of what you are used to. I am used to the way we do it here, so it makes sense to me. You are used to how they do it in your country, therefore, it makes sense to you. At work we use miltary time. Right now it is 0209hrs or 2:09 am, if it was 1:30pm I would say it is 1330hrs. Most people don't use or understand military time. So, like I said, it is a matter of what a person is used to. There is no "universal" method of writing the date, so it is whatever each country teaches that is considered correct for them.

I find 4th May2007 easy and more sensible to write than the American style 05.04.2007. Logically also 4th May 2007 makes more sense to me I shall explain .... It is because day comes first, the Month next and the Year is represented last. I feel early Americans wanted to do everything different from what the Britishers did and hence in defiance chose month first which still does not make sense if you ask me. But since their writing system has been here for many decades, centuries they can not change and should not change either since it is their tradition.
I live in America so when I have to fill out forms it is 05.04.2007 but when I write a letter it is 4thMay2007. Well that's me thanks for asking

Sreevasu, just gave you another + for your posting. Very interesting to see how we all do it all over the world.
I for one write 5/3/07, and most Americans are going to do it that way. Unless they are from another company first generation.
I don't think one way is logical, or not. Just as long as the date is right. :)

When you write 5/3/07, in the normal way as I practiced here, I will understand it as 5th of March 2007. But since I know that you are an American I have to read it as 3rd May 2007. Do we need a standardization in writing the date? If yes, there should be some logic also. Thank you Margieanne for responding and +rating.

This is one thing that annoys me to no end. It seems everyone is different here in Canada. I was always taught in school Month day year. The computer system at work is the opposite. It confuses me. So not to confuse others I like to write it out in full May 4, 2007. I don't know which is the most logical but I wish the world would decide on a universal way of doing it. It is kind of like the metric system, why can't the Americans join with the rest of the modern world? Why are there so many types of screws and screwdrivers? You would think the world could at least agree on some things!

You said it well. After all what we need is to communicate with others. If the purpose is served there is nothing to worry about the way of writing. The most interesting point is 'Americans' and the 'rest of the world' which deserves a detailed discussion. Thank you Whywiki for your immediate response.
