People with chronic anxiety can improve their condition by exercising their brains. A recent study showed that therapy to control worriers thoughts may be more soothing than therapy that focuses on changing anxious behaviors. Researchers at the University of Oxford in England found out that patients suffering from excessive worrying and tension felt better after undergoing cognitive behavior training (CBT). CBT helped patients identify the exaggerated thoughts that made them anxious and develop more realistic ways of thinking that would have a positive influence on their feelings and behavior. The method proved to be effective in relieving anxiety and related depression, and in improving the patients ability to identify and assess anxiety-provoking thoughts, says clinical psychological Gillian Butler.
