Do people these days really listen and appreciate the music they are listening to? In my observation, I noticed that majority of people do not really listen to music. They hear music because it's everywhere, but music appreciation goes beyond hearing.
There are people out there who are keen to prove how diverse their musical tastes are. Some even pretend to 'understand' a particular genre or musical style and do not hesitate to give you their opinion of which artists is the leader of that genre when they themselves hardly understand that genre, if at all.
What do you all think?

You don't like hip hop and rap. I share your sentiments exactly. There are very few hip hop and rap acts that truly has musical value.

There's no "real" music. Only music you like. And everyone likes to listen to beautiful music too. Don't have to be like "Beethoven" to appreciate music. To appreciate music, learn to listen and feel the emotion in it. Sometimes a piece of music or a song will bring back memories. Listening does not have to be a passive experience.

I have come through several decades of music from the sixties to the present day and I can distinguish between the genres quite easily. I don't stick to one artist, I go by the musical value of the pieces, and I enjoy anything from Classical, through Country, Pop, Metal, Soul, Love Songs etc. However, I know that I don't much appreciate opera music or house music, so I think I can be called a member of the music appreciation group. :-)
Brightest Blessings.

Hi there. Actually I don't listen to opera mainly because I don't know how to appreciate opera I guess, ha-ha. Anyway,
saw the video of Kelly Clarkson "Because Of You" on your profile page so I presume you liked her songs. Well, I liked her songs too especially "Breakaway". I think she has the most musical voice of all the Idol winners.
Hey, you can visit my blog on music appreciation at: http://wcw1908.blogspot.com/ There's nothing much there, just my personal take on the subject. Warm blessings to you too, ya.
