Where did this term come from? Its so offensive?
This last Hanukkah I was in a restaurant. I was paying my bill and an older woman walked up, I let her go ahead of me.
She said to the host. "Merry Christmas and she is so disgusted by the use of merry X-mas, that is the only holiday whynot just call it Christmas,"
The host replies, "actually it is not the only holiday, there is Hannukah,"
I chimed in saying "It actually comes before Christmas this month and gave the date."
She gets all hostile and says "Well that's not a real holiday." and storms out.
The host and I look at each other in a little disbelief.
Then he says, "your Jewish? I am too. Nonpracticing though, I am a friendly Jew."
I smiled and left.
I was very disturbed by this saying. I am nonpracticing, a friendly Jew.
He is basically saying a nonpracticing Jew is friendly, the underlying belief is assimilation which the Jewish people have fought so hard for so long to stop. It is sad and very self loathing.
I think it is sad that this term is used. Even worse than someone of any other religion saying this, it is denying his own ethnicity, his own people, it says a lot about public and self acceptance of the Jewish identity.

Wow he sounds like a loser, to me the topic "a friendly jew" is offensive because it supposes that friendly jews are some exception to the rule. Jewish people have taken a lot of abuse over the years.. I don't think the haters need any jewish assistance in belittling the religion. That crazy.. did you want to say anything to him? I take it you are jewish is this self-loathing thing popular?

Well my thought was he most likely raised in a non religious home and he was taught this term by his family. So I felt sorry for him actually. But I wanted to ask him to think about what he just said.... I was with my children though.. not the time or place.

What an unfriendly woman. I think, at the end of the day, its her loss that she fails to appreciate the beauty of Hanukkah and the traditions of Judaism, which, leaving aside the politics, has heavily influenced both the Christian and Muslim religions. Unfortunately biggots exist and after a while, I think the only attitude to take towards them is one of pitty.
As for the "Non-practicing" Jewish restraunteer, he raises an interesting question. What defines a Jew? Is it a race (Israel's multi-ethnic demography would suggest otherwise). Is it a religion? Or is it somewhere in between? Can one be ethnically Semitic without pracicing the Jewish traditions. Once again, its probably best to leave your friend as he is and allow him to find his Jewish identity with God.

Actually, I have met a VERY unfriendly practicing Jew, so bad that I have given up being what is called a Righteous Gentile (practicing Jewish holidays, laws, and traditions, but not being a converted Jew), and have returned to eating pork, but that is beside the point.
Still, I don't go around making rude comments or making fun of people's religious holidays.
And, Hanukkah (spelling?) is a REAL holiday, no matter what that hostile woman said!
Excuse me while I enjoy a ham sandwich.

I am not a hardcore religious person. The reason I pray is because I feel there is someone more powerful than us and whose will we cant go against. Thats why even though I am a Hindu, I have Holy Mecca as my Mobile wallpaper, the most common term I use when I am surprised-"Jesus Christ!!!". And whether it is hanukkah or Christmas or Diwali or Id...it doesnt matter as long as you believe in the presence of the almighty!Hope that keeps your heart at Peace!!
