Ideas for writing?

Where you do all get your ideas for writing? (I know the most asked question of all authors) I have always wanted to write a book since I was young, but just have no idea what it is that I would like to write about, so therefore have never really looked at it seriously. I would hate to try and force a story. Do you have to specifically try and think of ideas? Or do they just pop into your head?

I think reading is the best way to get ideas. Read everything, the news, commentary, books, short stories, articles, anything that interests you in any way. If you keep your mind open as you read, the ideas will come, maybe not right then and there, but later on, they'll "pop into your head."

I get my ideas from my dreams and daydreams. when it comes to books, as well as things that interest me. if you are interested in something it will be easier to write about.

Since I am a member of a writing group, we meeting formally twice a month. At these meetings we are given a few prompts to choose from to write about. Sometimes I find the little bit I write in ten minutes is good enough to expand into a short story. I have also kept a novel in mind when writing my prompts and have used a bunch of different prompts in the story. There are many websites and books that provide prompts to help stimulate your creativity. And yes, it is highly recommended to write down dreams. I did dream a scene for my current novel. The actual characters in my novel were in the dream. It was really very cool. As television shows get ideas for their shows with "ripped from the headlines" episodes, you too can get ideas from the news or just listening to what other people are talking about in their lives and such. For example, my husband told me that his four cousins drove in one car for an 18 hour drive. These siblings are so different I would love to have been a fly on the wall in that car. I decided I might write a story along those lines some day. But not now. I have to finish what I am doing now.

Thanks for the advice! I might have alook online this weekend for some of these prompt websites, see if anything interests me :) And will have to go buy a journal for my dreams too! Which means shopping, I love shopping :) Maybe I could write about shopping? lol

I use my own experiences as raw material for my writings. I just write what I have known. I have had enough things happen to me for me to be able to write directly from experience, which I then attempt to translate into some kind of interesting creative writing.

I'm newly just started writing articles for Helium. They have lots of different topics to write an article answer to. That works for me, so far, as it gives me ideas of things I want to write about in the future. I keep a list of topics I want to write about in my Word Processor. Did the same thing if I ever decide to start a blog. You didn't say if you want your book to be nonfiction or fiction. The advice I hear a lot is write about what you know. Family, friends, experiences you've had there. Hobbies, interests, things you like/dislike. School/work/relationships/pets/travel. Look at your interests in myLot. See which categories you have the most numbers in, that might indicate where you have strong interest. Journaling might be a good idea too, as that just lets the words flow, without stopping to edit for grammar or spelling. It's also been recommended to keep a notebook with you. Then if you get ideas about something you want to write about, you can write the idea down to develop later, even if you can't do the actual writing at that point.

I get mine from reading books about true events, just today I was reading about the Salem witch trials and got an idea to write. When you have writer's block or can't think of an idea, trying to force one just doesn't work for me. My ideas just pop into my head. Good luck on your book :)

Thank you :) Reading history would be good I think, not only learning something but could give ideas. Will add that to the list!

in my case its actually better if the idea is natural. i mean it flows in your head and in your hand while writing. cause it would really take me a long long hours to finish an article which i dont have any passion or idea how to start. like the last time i was asked by our editor-in-chief to submit an article pertaining to something i really dont like and of course that also means that i dont have the willingness inside to create and write ideas regarding the topic. its really hard if you're writing for the sake of writing. you have to have the love of writing and towards the subject.

thanks :) I think that's why I haven't really done much up unto this point, so now I am going to try and see if I get any ideas from things around me, but not try to push it too hard.

I have not done a lot of writing for publishing. I mainly just write to clear my head, and get ideas down on paper. They normally just pop into my head, and I put pen to paper. Good luck with it. People can tell if the idea/writing/story is forced, so make sure you don't do that.

Thanks Belmc :) I guess thats why I've never really done anything about it yet, was kinda hoping I would get some great inspiration one day lol But I think I'll start practicing and stuff from now on, just to see how things go.

I guess it depends what sort of a story you want to write, if it is a kids story look at something around you a toy or pet or a situation and write about that or if it is a facual story look around your own life, your life or something that you are passionate about...I hope you write your book.

I've written a few short stories just for fun. Thoughts/imagination, Dreams and Life would be the main source of where they come from. Take yourself to another world your own fantasy...... create your own scene I think it would have to come Naturally than to be forced to work, That's how it happens to me... Keep a journal close to write thoughts into and eventually it will come....

They just come from my dreams, what I heard and saw, and ideas just pop out from the sky. You do not need to force ideas. It's known as imagination. You could imagine what a couple is saying --so instead of honing in and finding out they are discussing the movie they went to see or that they really have to go to Walmart before the store is closed, imagine that they are aliens in disguise planning to take over the world, etc.

A lot of my ideas for writing come from my dreams, places I have been, and things I have read. I love to read, and am constantly looking for new books, magazines, and blogs to read. I use what I read, and what I know to help enhance my writing.

I write articles for both Helium and Associated Content. I also have two blogs that I try to keep as up to date as possible - though sometimes between the kids, horses, and my husband that is hard to do :) I have also been working on a romance novel off and on for quite a while now. My husband and I drive a truck cross country for a living so it is hard to find the time to write sometimes.

Try to think of something (ANYTHING) that interests you. Like for me, most of my story ideas revolve around police officers because I really like them. And if I'm thinking up an idea I try and put myself in the middle of it to see if it would be exciting and worth writing. I have a notebook of story ideas that I have come up with. You just need to find out what you would be interested in writing a story about and than forming one around it.

I think the best way to get writing idea is strangize your daily life.(I hope the word strangize is a right one,but i think you know what i mean)though reading books and getting experience from others are good ways to get inspiration, but I think your life is the most special and different thing. I like writting, novels or poems, and some of them are not bad.too addicted to your personal feeling or experience is not a good thing, but if you get rid of it,you just repeat others.

I am not a pro in writing, though i was once a feature editor in a school organ, but i enjoy reading some of the most sought after novelist/ writers, especially those pertaining financial freedom, motivational books, situational, or anything which is practical and easy to understand. I believe that if you think writing a book is ur greatest desire, then try to start asking...to whom will your book be read-who will be your market. Communcation or medium of language is also another thing to consider.Although english is an intl language, if you wish ur book/s to be read, might as well trim it at that. The title also makes some catch. What else, with so many specialization booming nowadays, its still different if you try to hone your topic base on the age brackets. Usually w/ that on mind you can better think of a way to choose the type of topic t that will surely hit the market and provide you avenues of ideas and concepts.

When i write most of the time it comes from within. When something happens to me or some changes came into my life or if I felt something so strong. Sometimes it also comes from a sudden idea...a sudden thinking and I dwell in this and write it.
