What do you think of cell phone use while driving?

I am a statisical anomaly. In this day and age I still do not own a cell phone. Really I just do not have the need. Besides, the only people who would call would be the bill collectors and telemarketers. All that aside, I have rode with my daughter on numerous occasions where she not only talks incessantly on the phone but text messages people while driving. I will give her credit for being very good at driving and texting without hardly ever having to look at her phone but she has still scared the daylights out of me on quite a few occasions. I worry constantly about her being on the road. What do you think of people who talk and text people on their cell phones while driving? Do you think they should start giving tickets to people they catch doing this?

That's a good discussion question. It is illegal where I live to use a mobile while driving. Once a friend was upset at me for not responding when driving. I told them that if they really were my friend they wouldn't want me to do that as it can get me hurt.

Serina, I have been in near misses due to people driving and yakking on the cell phones at the same time. A couple of them were near head-on collisions at high speeds. Many have been at 30 mph and were so close I could see the color of their eyes. A few of them laughed as they jerked the wheel to avert the accident from happening! I flipped them the bird. Talk to you daughter. Tell her to either use an ear piece or to pull over. There is not a message that is worth risking your life or the lives of others. Huggers to you....Sarina

Using the phone while driving is illegal in the UK. People can use them with a built in hands free set only but I have found that useing the phone while driving is dangerous anyway. It would help if more people were caught and prosecuted.

I would say it is dangerous. I have seem drivers talking on the phone and losing concentration whilst I have been driving behind them - swerving out of their traffic lane and nearly colliding with other traffic. It has been made illegal here now in the UK as there has been plenty of accidents which proves that it is dangerous. I use a hand-free kit, but even then a conversation on the phone can prove distracting, so I tend to switch the phone off now.

I will admitt I have driven and been on the phone at the same time. I do not think it is right or safe. A lot of states have laws against it. Today I seen a printed sign on a truck window that said "HANG UP THE PHONE AND DRIVE" I agree. I do know my daughter and son both drive and talk so they are just like yours. I do not know if they do any texting while driving. Good luck that they do not get into an accident.

For very short "I'm on my way" type of calls or if you have a headset, I think it's ok, but last night there was a woman behind me who was swerving all over the road because she was jabbering on the phone.
