Would you be afraid to drive across this bridge?

This picture was forwarded to me by a friend. The Millau viaduct is part of the new E11 expressway connecting Paris and Barcelona and features the highest bridge piers ever constructed. The tallest is 240 meters (787 feet) high and the overall height will be an impressive 336 meters (1102 feet), making this the highest bridge in the world. I would have a hard time with this bridge...I know that I could not drive over it. However, what a beautiful picture and what a view! Could you drive across this bridge? Why or why not??

NO WAY! I couldn't do it at all! I hate regular plain ol' bridges, and I know I couldnt do it. I know for sure I couldnt drive over it. MAYBE I could be a passenger but only if was necessary for me to go over it. And I would be freaking out the entire time.

Thanks for posting this information. I never knew this bridge existed and it certainly is a beautiful photo and I love learning new things. I'm a big baby when it comes to crossing bridges so I doubt I would ever be able to cross over this one. We have some long bridges here in the USA. One is in Maryland I think and spans a few miles, while another bridges Florida with the keys (another few miles), but these bridges are not high so not nearly as scary.

The 7 Mile Bridge on the way to Key West always bothered me when we crossed it, but the two that really got to me were the Cooper River Bridge outside Charleston, SC and the Verranzano Narrows Bridge going out to Long Island. They both absolultely terrified me. I guess you can tell I don't like bridges either...LOL.

It sure looks beautiful, however also dangerous. I do not think I could drive over it, or even be in a car trying to drive it. I would much rather be in an airballon over it, and I am not to fond of hights *lol*

Sure I'd be afraid of it...mostly because I'd be worried it was going to collapse at any moment while driving on it. But if I HAD to, to get to the other side, then I would.

I'm afraid I'd either have a heart attack if I tried to drive across or be involved in an accident. Yuck!

It is really beautiful and I would imagine you'd get quite a view of the surrounding area. I would be proud of you for driving across it, and I'd also be thankful that it wasn't me driving.

No I would not just looking at it and imagining me driving over that got me into Panic I would be terrified in case someone drove mad on it and you would have to sverve there is nowhere to go I am also scared of heights and if I was able to see underneath I would probably crash the Car through Panic So no chance of me ever going on that lol whether I am driving or someone else

There is no way I could stand to drive over that bridge. I have a terrific fear of heights. I would have to be sedated beforehand.

"Sedated" is another word for "knocked out", right?

It's hard to tell for sure by that picture, but Yikes! what is holding up that bridge!? It looks pretty scary to me! I think I'd have to pass.

Estherlou, I'm with you on that. Here's a link to some very interesting information about the bridge: http://www.roadtraffic-technology.com/projects/millau_viaduct/

Whoa, I'm really not sure... I would not be able to look over the side if I was driving - that did not work well on a big bridge around here... If I was a passenger, not sure if I could look or not... I have a height thing, and sometimes I'm ok, sometimes I'm not. I'd hate to have a panic attack up there!

I'm sure that the bridge is safe and has enough side railings and features to keep it safe. I'd love to drive over it - but have to make sure I dont look down!!

That's something I've learned over the years -- look out, not down. Good advice.

You're braver than I am then. I don't even want to go with my husband driving, and I'm not sure he would even want to drive across it.

Holy moly! That's some bridge! And yes it is an incredibly beautiful bridge, but no way you could get me on it...it doesn't exactly look very secure..does it??

I don't care if it looks secure or not -- there's just no way I'd get on it for any reason. LOL.

I could not drive over this bridge. When I was a child, I used to walk over a swinging bridge between two mountains without even a second thought, but I wouldn't even consider it today. In my teens, I rode on a 24 mile bridge over water leading into New Orleans, but today, I am not sure I could do it without having a wee bit of anxiety. So no, there is no way I would walk, drive or crawl over the bridge in your picture. It is indeed a lovely site, but that is as close as I wish to get to it.

That's exactly what I thought. I've seen that bridge in Louisiana, and one of my sisters used to live in North Carolina. I've heard her and my parents talk about Grandfather Mountain. I still haven't seen it myself.

You and me both. It amazes me that you walked over a swinging bridge between two mountains and rode on a 24 mile bridge leading into New Orleans (was that over Lake Ponchatrain [sp?]).
• United States

Yes it was the Lake Ponchatrain bridge. I was 11 at the time, but I am not sure that I could do that now. The bridge between the two mountains was at about the same age. It was at Grandfather's Mountain in North Carolina.

What a beautiful bridge Claudia but there is just no way am I going to get on that bridge. I had trouble when My son drove me up to look out mountain in Colorado. And I had my feet on the ground. The view was spectacular but the ride up was something else. Ii was a convertible with the top up but I felt this weight pushing me to the floor until we got to the top. The mountain dropped away on my side of the car possibly having something to do with the pressure.

I am a scardy cat....I hate to drive over any bridge and this one would give me palpatations all across it until I got off it....probably even give me a heart attack. I'm like you it would be even worse if I had to drive over it. My hands would be shaking so hard I would probably get stopped by the cops for reckless driving....of even drunken driving. Nice pic. +

Gifana, you actually gave me such a visual that I could see you getting stopped by the cops. Not a good picture. If you got stopped, just use the heart attack defense...and have them get you to a hospital ASAP.

Wow that looks amazing! It really wouldn't bother me to drive across it. I have a friend who's quite scared of bridges, he's ok to drive across them but he wouldn't walk across them lol! I leave my faith in the architects and builders who built it!

I'd have faith in the architects and builders, but not in the crazy drivers...LOL. I'll pass on crossing it.

I am afraid of heights so I don't think I would be able to go across it. I cant even stand to watch those thrill seekers on TV that crawl out on the scaffolding to look down a big skyscraper. It gives me the chills and I have to turn the channel. I don't see myself ever going to France either so there isn't much chance of this happening for me.

Actually, I'm kind of glad there's little chance that I'll ever go to France or Spain...especially after seeing that picture.

I don't know... I don't think I could drive over there myself but I probably wouldn't mind as a passenger. I"m pretty sure the bridge is safe, or else it wouldn't have been built and should be as dangerous as anything else, no more. I would worry if the person driving was tired or sleepy just in case LOL

Yes, I'd worry a lot more if the person driving was tired or sleepy also.

that is some picture! it is breathtaking - literally!!! breath taking. I would probably go across it if I "had" to...but I would be holding my breath the whole while as well as saying some fervent prayers.

If I knew in advance I'd have to go across it, you can bet I'd be praying from the second I knew I had to cross it until I was safely on the other side. However, no return trip for me. I'd go back the long way, even if it took weeks.
