I went to the surgeon today for my very arthritic knees (i was hit by a car in 1990 and am in major pain) and the dr suggested cortisone shots...Do they help? Do they hurt alot to get? How long does the effects last? Should i take the next day off work? (although i work in an office, i am up and down a lot - going to the photocopier etc...) any helpful suggestions would be appreciated...thanks in advance :-)

i have heard wonderful things about these shots from several people, however my doctor told me yesterday that they will not help everybody but i decided hey, lets give it a try. I received a cortisone shot in each knee and didn't find it to be painful. It was slightly uncomfortable but not painful. However by the time I arrived home I was in a lot more pain then before I went. The pain by 10:00 p.m. had me getting out the bottle of percotte. I have been off of work for 3 weeks due to avascular necrosis and am hoping that these shots help enough that I can go back to work for a couple hours a day. I am on my feet all day. Anyway, there is no way I could have worked today. Pain level at a 6 even with pain medication and I litterally can not stand for more than 15 minutes. I walk like a penguine when I do walk. My doctor said this should last less than 48 hours and then I should notice a difference in my pain level. Hopefully much better than before. If you would like to contact me in the next couple of days to see if there is an improvement feel free. As of right now I would not recommend them.

Years ago I hurt my knee in a bad accident. I have been to the doctor who thought cortisone shots would be a good way to deal with the pain. After looking up information about the shots I had to disagree. Cortisone, used to frequently, starts to wear away and erode the naturally smoooth bone surfaces that glide against each other at the joints. Nearby muscles when subjected to cortisoneshots, begin to weaken, discolor, thin, and lose strength. Subjected tissue has to rebuild drom scratch. It is a very long process, one that may take years.Sometimes the tissue never heals. The worst part is that when pain returns, it comes back with a vengeance. And rarely goes away. I didn't like the things that I had read about cortisone shots so I decided that they weren't for me.

Cortisone shots can be a big help and yes, they do work! The duration time of relieve varies for most people. Your doctor can tell you more about that. Some people can get several weeks relief. Getting them can hurt like he!!, but it's worth it. (Depends on the person and the area, I guess, as well as the person giving the shot.) Ask your doctor to give you a local antisthetic first, that helps.

The chance of it reducing pain is high, although the period of which it helps varies per patient. In case of osteoarthritis the effect usually is a couple of days, but for other people it can be a matter of weeks or even a month or more before they need another shot. In this period you'll start with a great moment in which your knee feels "better than new" as many would say, but slowly it'll go back again to the pain there was before the shot. Pain it takes to get I can't say, asides from that many people take pain differently anyways. But many are able to walk without pain pretty soon and have a lot less side-effects than with systemic therapy.
