do u supervise ur children around animals?

we've just gotten a new pup and our hard and fast rule is never leave the 2 of them alone together. They have a great rapport, but we never know what might happen when our backs are turned and we don't want them hurting each other by accident. My son is 1 the puppy is 8 weeks old, so developmentally they are about on par. What kind of pets do u have and would u leave ur children unsupervised around them? Please state your children's ages so I can make a note for future reference.
