I also have been writing books but haven't gotten anythign published yet. I write children's book and board books for younger children. I would love to be a published author one day.
My kids are really young so I don't really have an idea on what is a good topic for older children.
Good luck with your book. Have you decided on a topic yet? I knwo you might not want to share on here so no one steals your idea.

I have so many ideas...just can't seem to get them together, ya know? I'm a preschool teacher and I have a hard time writing for young children. Go figure. I find it easier to write for middle grade readers. Keep me informed on your progress and I'll let you know mine!:)

Okay, will do.
I love meeting other writers. I keep going back and forth from writing to photography. Right now I am doing a lot of picture taking. I also started to write a book on Photography. Not that there aren't a ton already.

I have been asking this exact question simply because I find that a lot of stories for their age are mysteries. I decided to read a couple (but only read one so far) to get some ideas on writing youth literature. I think what needs to be out there for them to read is stories that sneak in lessons in morality, especially peer pressure.
However, fun stories are good too. A distant relative of mine just wrote a book called "How It Happened in Peach Hill" by Marthe Jocelyn. It is a cute story that she originally wrote as a short story and has now published a novel based on that short story about a girl who pretends to be deaf so that she can pass on secrets of the neighbourhood to her mother who pretends to be a fortune teller. It is a fun story.
I wrote a short story about a young girl whose new friend was being very private. Her mother and her had to flee from the abusive father and change their names. I had my daughter and her friend read it and they wanted to read more. I read it to my writing group and THEY wanted to read more. I didn't intend on writing a novel, just a short story.
I think there are lots of ideas without having to get into mysteries. I think there are too many mysteries. Kids need to read fun stuff and stuff they can relate to.

Thank you so much for your response! I've found that such an important thing about writing is always reading and taking notes. One of my assignments was a fantasy story and I really enjoyed it. I would like to try my hand at mystery writing, but I agree that there is too much right now. My teacher says lessons with a moral are not as accepted by editors now, but I still think they need it at that age and it can be done without sounding too 'preachy'. I love fun ideas that are out of the norm and I try to stay away from cliches if possible. Thank you again for your response.

I have a nephew who likes stories about wonderful idols in the past. It's about the story of past inventors and how did they overcome their problems to produce their inventions and stuff like that. I hope this helps. Thanks.
